Bali Hi – The Night Club @ the rooftop of ITC Maurya was one of my favourite haunts for decadent Chinese food before it shut down unceremoniously. My thoughts always went to Bali Hi every time I crossed the doors of Cafe Bali Hai located at Cross Point Mall, Opposite Galleria, DLF Phase 4, Gurgaon. I cannot even call Cafe Bali Hai a distant cousin. There is just no parallel to Bali Hi even if people use the abridged names for their eateries. But well here two of us were last evening to savour the Pan Asian Cuisine Cafe Bali Hai has to offer.

If I say, we stepped in with trepidation, we really did. The lighting seemed really dimmed out and switched off in one corner. The restaurant was sparsely occupied and light music was playing so there was a calm of sorts. We were not greeted at the door nor were we shown to a table. Though, when we sat down on a floating swing table (luckily firmed to the wall), the menus were presented immediately followed by a bottle of water. They did check if we wanted bottled or house water which is good. The ambience was pleasantly soft. Decor included wine racks on the walls, see through shelves with books, book shaped lamps and comfortable furniture which made us feel comfortable.

The menu was extensive though we were in a mood for some appetisers and mains sans carbs. The order included Chicken with Basil and Five Spice (Rs.375) which was nice. The taste was predominantly star anise with basil being understated. This was followed by Seafood Dim sums (Rs.435) which was disappointing since the dim sum casing was tad undercooked and the seafood tasted more like chicken. They didn’t have lamb available on the menu which was another disappointment. Hence, we opted for Ginger Prawns (Rs.475) and Kung Pao Chicken (Rs.375). Though, the preparations were nice, both dishes had an overdoes of light soy sauce making both dishes saltier. The peanut touch to Kung Pao chicken was good and added a crunch to the dish.

The service was just above average; the napkins were placed casually, food suggestions were not offered and the servers had to be called out to.

Overall, the experience at Cafe Bali High, Cross Point Mall, was just above average since both the service and food could have been better. The bill was a hefty Rs.2200 including service charge which I thought was a bit high for a restaurant that was not fine dining, the quality of ingredients used and the sizes of portions served.
