Mughal Mahal Gurgaon - Losing its touch

Mughal Mahal Gurgaon Review, SCO 46, Sector 31, Gurgaon

Mughal Mahal Gurgaon opened its doors a few years back. Till then, I was a diehard lover of Mughal Mahal Rajendra Place‘s food. Read, Butter Chicken Boneless. Actually! To think of it I still am. Its sumptuously fantastic and still retains its old world charm and employees. So when Mughal Mahal Gurgaon opened, I was thrilled – same amazing food delivered right at my doorstep. The restaurant wasn’t done bad either when it came to ambience. We could all go together for a family dinner to the joint.

A couple of years later, the once two storied Mughal Mahal Gurgaon restaurant gave away its ground floor to a Subway franchise. There were no worries since the first floor continued to operate and serve delicacies similar to the Rajendra Place outlet. I continued with my patronage though the signs of depletion were evident. A debacle would soon happen, I thought and it still hasn’t luckily.

I was in the vicinity of Sector 31 with a friend just recently and couldn’t resist the pang to gorge on that incredible butter chicken that I feel is world’s best. To top it all my friend Ajay Arora wanted to savour some nice brain curry. So here we were trudging up the stairs of Mughal Mahal Gurgaon located in SCO 46, Sector 31 Market, Gurgaon.

The restaurant was empty and it was lunch time. Not a good sign at all. We were received and seated appropriately. Water was served almost immediately. Without waiting for the menu the order was given. A portion of Butter Chicken boneless and a Brain Curry. To accompany the main dishes, we ordered for a couple of Naans and Rotis. Our server was efficient and without a further ado, he planted the standard pickle boat consisting of pickled onions (disappointing since these were just soaked in water), green chutney (nice) and mixed pickles (really nice).

The service was of course rapid since we were the only customers so the food appeared in no time at all. Guess we both had made the chef really happy. The butter chicken boneless was awesome as always. Though, I still feel that the one at Rajendra Place is better. The brain curry failed to make its mark. It was just boiled brains immersed in to thick masala and nothing else. It seems the Chef didn’t even go thorugh the trouble of breaking the large chunks into smaller ones. The naans were thin and not fluffy, though crisp still. Rajendra Place takes the cake when it comes to fluffy and crisp naans. The rotis were made our of flour and not refined flour which was another nice touch.

In a nutshell, when at Mughal Mahal Gurgaon, stick to the tried and tested butter chicken boneless and mutton lababdar. Their tandoori stuff is good too. Avoid being adventurous.
