Gurugram: Flyer back from UK infected by Omicron

GURUGRAM: A 30-year-old man, who returned from the UK a couple of weeks ago, has been found to have been infected with the Omicron variant. The man, who landed in the city on December 10, is currently at an isolation centre in Sector 67.
Officials said a test conducted on the man after he landed had come negative. Eight days later, when he was tested for the second time, he was found to have Covid. His samples were sent for genome sequencing, the reports of which arrived on Sunday.
Officials said the man took both doses of Pfizer vaccine. According to Rajeev Arora, additional chief secretary (health), he is the sixth Covid patient in the state to be infected with Omicron. Three other patients are from Yamunanagar, and one each from Faridabad and Panchkula.
Amid the concern over Omicron, the health department proposed four new micro-containment zones on Sunday, when the city saw 68 cases, the highest in the past six months.
After a lull for three months, Covid cases have started seeing an uptick again. In the 26 days of December, the city has added 447 new Covid cases, 269 of which are active. Of these patients, 267 are recovering at home. But the recent rise in cases could also be attributed to the fact that Gurugram has intensified testing of late. Between December 19 and Sunday, the number of tests has increased from 3,666 to 5,083.
Officials said the four areas proposed for micro-containment zones have three or more cases each. The proposed areas are a flat in Tower 1 of Amber Court Essel Tower in Sector 28, which has five active cases; Tulip Purple in Sector 69, where there are four active cases; Block C of Palam Vihar, with three patients, and a house in Sector 45 with three cases.
Door-to-door screenings will be carried out in houses in these areas along with regular sanitisation. At present, the city has nine micron containment zones in three areas.
“We have been observing a rise in cases because of a general laxity in maintaining Covid protocols. It is being seen that one member with a history of recent travel is infecting others in the family after returning home. We appeal to people to isolate themselves if they start observing Covid symptoms,” said Virender Yadav, the CMO.
