Multi-crore heist case: Arrest warrant against IPS officer
GURUGRAM: A city court has issued an arrest warrant against IPS officer Dheeraj Sethia in connection with the multi-crore heist case.
The special task force (STF) of Haryana Police, which is probing the case, had named Sethia as one of the accused after he failed to respond to their notices and conducted a search at his residence last week. He is absconding at present and has been suspended.
Cash amounting to several crores was allegedly stolen from two flats owned by the developer of a Sector 84 residential society in August. So far, STF estimates put the stolen amount at around Rs 24 crore.
When the crime branch of Gurugram police was investigating the matter, Sethia was posted in Gurugram as DCP (south) and was holding additional charge of DCP (crime). During a bureaucratic reshuffle a few weeks ago, he was posted as the Kurukshetra SP. He was again shunted to the Indian Reserve Battalion recently after his name cropped up in the probe.
Additional session judge Jasbir Singh, while hearing an application filed by STF on Saturday, issued an arrest warrant against Sethia and also issued directions for re-arrest of ASI Vikas Gulia of Delhi Police’s special cell. Gulia, who allegedly collected the stolen money and distributed it to the people involved in the crime, was arrested by Gurugram police in October but released on bail.
DIG (STF) Satheesh Balan said, “We had moved the application before the court and an arrest warrant has been issued.” The case was handed over to the STF on October 30 after allegations of glaring lapses in the probe conducted by Gurugram police. It arrested two doctors who allegedly informed a gangster about the cash and helped plan and execute the crime. The STF also recovered around Rs 3.9 crore from their possession. In disclosure statements, the doctors claimed they paid Sethia Rs 3.5 crore in cash and gold bullion as bribes. Later, Sethia allegedly kept Rs 20 lakh and returned the remaining money and gold.
After Sethia went incommunicado, the STF on December 8 added his name and sections of the Anti-Corruption Act and Section 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) of IPC to the existing FIR of theft registered at Kherki Daula police station in August. The state government suspended him on December 10.
