Omicron scare: Watch out for these five symptoms
Quite quickly, the Omicron variant of coronavirus has lived up to its ‘variant of concern’ status across the world. First reported in southern Africa towards the end of November, this variant is spreading across the world at a breathtaking pace.
More than 200 Covid-19 cases of the Omicron variant have been reported in India already. In the United States, it is now the dominant Covid strain, representing 73% of sequenced cases, data by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published on Monday shows. It has effectively displaced the previously dominant
variant, as feared by experts. Many countries have delayed, or altogether scrapped (for now) their plans for a full-fledged reopening.
This sudden surge in Omicron cases, which has been detected in around 90 countries, has re-imposed the threat of Covid-19. But experts say that if Covid-appropriate behaviour, coupled with vaccination is followed, one can remain safe. Here are the top five symptoms that patients reported, as per research by ZOE.
- Runny nose
- Headache
- Fatigue (mild or severe)
- Sneezing
- Sore throat
Loss of appetite and ‘brain fog’ have also been reported as commons symptoms. Brain fog is a general term used to describe the feeling of being mentally slow, fuzzy, or spaced out.
ZOE Covid study app functions on analysis provided by King’s College, London. For circling in on the symptoms, Zoe used recent data from London. The scientists analysed symptom data from positive cases recorded in the ZOE COVID Study and compared with data from early October when Delta was dominant.
Experts have reiterated that these are still early days for Omicron variant and making specific claims related to its severity is difficult and have advised maintaining Covid-appropriate behaviour and getting vaccination shots. Ahead of Christmas and New Year’s eve, the World Health Organisation’s Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a press conference that ‘an event canceled is better than a life canceled.’ “It is better to cancel now and celebrate later than to celebrate now and grieve later,” he added.
