Gurugram: At-risk residents told to stay at home after a rise in Covid cases

GURUGRAM: A slight increase in new Covid-19 cases in the city spurred the health department to issue a stay-at-home advisory for people who may be vulnerable to the infection on Tuesday. The advisory also takes into account the high chances of infection in the ongoing festival season.
Residents above 60 years of age with comorbidities, pregnant women and children below the age of 10 years have been advised to stay at home.
A total of 165 new Covid-19 cases have been recorded this month compared to 150 Covid-19 cases in September. The positivity rate has risen from 0.1% in September to 0.2% this month. According to the health department, most patients who recently tested positive are in home isolation and the hospitalisation rate has been relatively low. “We have been carrying out more than 3,000 tests every day. A slight rise in positivity is a concern, at present,” said Dr Virender Yadav, chief medical officer, Gurugram.
“The only way to protect yourself from the virus is to restrict going out of home, wearing a mask, maintaining social distance and getting vaccinated at the earliest,” said Yadav.
In case people stepped out of their homes, the advisory instructed them to maintain a minimum of six feet distance from others and use face covers or masks in public places. “Respiratory etiquettes should be strictly followed by residents. This involves the strict practice of covering one’s mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing with a tissue or handkerchief or fixed elbow and disposing of used tissues properly. Spitting should be strictly prohibited in public places,” added the advisory.
In addition, the advisory included a host of rules for fair or exhibition organisers. First, staggered timings and restricted entries have to be implemented in such cases. Separate entry and exit gates should be installed to avoid crowding. It is also mandatory for volunteers to ensure thermal scanning, social distancing and mask usage on the premises. No symptomatic person would be allowed to enter the premises and even fully-vaccinated people would have to wear masks and practice social distancing. Lastly, closed-circuit cameras should be installed to monitor compliance with all the norms.
The advisory also recommended disinfecting surfaces and no-touch practices in religious places.
