Health department begins screening for Brucellosis in areas with cattle
Gurgaon: Amid a fight against a global pandemic, the Gurgaon health department has also started to plan screening zoonotic bacterial diseases in the city. Brucellosis, a bacterial infection that spreads from animals to humans, is most common among them.
According to doctors, people are primarily infected by eating raw or unpasteurised dairy products. However, the bacteria that cause Brucellosis can also spread through the air or direct contact with infected animals.
“As the disease is transmitted to humans from animals such as cattle, the health staff will carry out screening in areas where people live close to cattle. Brucellosis is the most common zoonotic disease. People get infected by eating raw dairy products, inhaling contaminated air and touching the blood and body fluids of infected animals. People who have weakened immune systems should avoid handling animals that are known to have the disease,” said Dr Virender Yadav, chief medical officer, Gurgaon.
There are similarities between Covid and Brucellosis infection symptoms, the CMO said, adding that health experts need to be extra alert. The symptoms of these diseases include fever, chills, headache, body ache, general weakness and fatigue. In some cases, Brucellosis can be fatal as well. The disease can be treated by the administration of antibiotics.
The animal husbandry department had carried out a weeklong vaccination drive for cattle in the city. A total of 35,000 cattle in Gurgaon — in the age group of 4 to 8 months — were inoculated under this programme as Haryana aims to eradicate Brucellosis by 2030.
“Humans can get infected by exposure to unpasteurised milk and its products, infected tissues, aborted foetus and genital discharges of an infected animal,” said deputy director, Dr Punita Gahlawat, animal husbandry department.
