Purani Delhi Express - Wholesome Homesome Food

The Manchandas are not new to the food business. Mr C.P. Manchanda still operates his catering business out of New Delhi. So when the family moved to Gurgaon it was natural for the younger Nitesh Manchanda to follow his father’s footsteps. The result of which is Purani Delhi Express located on the ground floor of Sushant Tower, Sector 56, Gurgaon.

Purani Delhi Express is not about Purani Dilli ka khana, its more about wholesome homesome food that can be ordered in or taken away. Purani Delhi Express does not have a dine in facility. States Nitesh “We opted for a takeaway/ home delivery model to minimise costs since affording a dine in restaurant in a Shopping Mall would come with heavy rentals”. They however do outdoor caterings when an opportunity presents.

The phones do not stop ringing, the ranges do not slacken down and neither does the staff of twelve boys who Nitesh manages. As one looks into the kitchen there is action everywhere, not even one person is idling around. Lot of teamwork is visible. Purani Delhi Express has a decently crafted menu without an overdose and includes some Indian Chinese too. There are half & quarter portions (for non-veg mains only) available so one can eat as much as the pocket and the stomach permits.

I confess I am a Rajma addict and can eat them in whatever form – even kebabs. So that’s the first thing I usually check if its on the menu. Call it my yardstick for a good measure. Kashmiri Rajma (Rs.80{Full}-50{Half}) at Purani Delhi Express meets my expectations but does not exceed it. I can do with a bit more spice in it. Most of the food delivered by Purani Delhi Express is moderate on spices so works well for most people including children.

Their Tandoori Chicken (Rs. 220-120) is a hit with kids and adults all the same. Their Canteen Ki Dal (Rs.80-50) or Dal Fry is quite nice and full of flavour with the right kind of bite. Not to be missed is Bakre Ke Nakhre (Rs.410-210), a spicy but delectable preperation of tender mutton morsels in thick gravy and would go very well with their Mirch Paranthas (Rs.20). Albeit in my case they forgot to add mirch to the parantha so I was happy munching on the simple Lacha ones. Chicken Lababdar (Rs.340-180-110{Qtr}) is a good choice and comes in a rich gravy.

Purani Delhi Express also offers fixed rate Thalis (Rs.100 Veg; Rs.130 Non-Veg) and Rice Combos which work very well in case you are in a rush and want a substantial meal else you can simply pick up a roll (Rolls start from Rs.40) and run along. Being a take away/ home delivery outfit, they use foil casseroles and round plastic boxes which pretty much every other restaurant does as well. This bit is fairly standard.

“We want to expand” says Nitesh slowing taking out an advert of an upcoming investors meet that he intends to participate in hoping to raise funds and take his business to another level. All the best Nitesh – We hope you expand and keep feeding Gurgaon bellies with your good food.
