Session half done, but many students yet to get textbooks

Image
Gurgaon: For the last year, Priya (name changed), a class 6 student at a government school in Pataudi, has been studying without any textbook. She is among the many students in the city who failed to find a partner in the book-exchange programme rolled out by the state as a stop-gap arrangement to address the issue of non-availability of textbooks in the government schools across Haryana. “I didn’t receive any book last year as well as this year. Teachers say that the government hasn’t released books. So, they dictate notes and we rely on them for our studies. At times, teachers send pictures of the pages from their books and I study from that,” the class 6 student said. A total of 85,000 students from classes 1 to 8 in the city have been studying without books ever since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out last year. With half of the current academic session (2021-22) over, most of these students in the government schools are also waiting for the direct benefit transfer (DBT) announced

Kartik Aaryan is on the proverbial roll. The actor has just completed two films – ‘Freddy’ and ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’, and is set to head straight into a third film, where he will play ‘Shehzada’. The actor’s next film will roll in October and it stars Kriti Sanon and is directed by Rohit Dhawan. Kartik and Kriti had previously worked together in ‘Luka Chuppi’ and their pairing was appreciated by the audience, too. The film is said to be a remake of the Allu Arjun-starrer Telugu movie, ‘Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo’, which had also featured Pooja Hegde. The film is being produced by the makers of Shahid Kapoor’s ‘Jersey’, Allu Arvind, Aman Gill and S Radha Krishna. It has also been speculated that Manisha Koirala could be a part of the film, playing a role that was done by Tabu in the Telugu original. Kartik has been putting in a lot of time and effort recently, learning and honing his dance skills. In fact, the star had even shared his unique new version of the Butta Bomma song, which fe

Durga Puja committees in Gurgaon opt for low-key celebrations

Image
Pandal hopping has been one of the highlights of Gurgaon’s Durga Puja celebrations for years. The city’s Bengali community organises over two dozen Durga Pujas across the city every year. So, the disappointment was inevitable when COVID caused puja celebrations in the city to be cancelled last year. Aficionados and foodies will just have to wait longer as the persistence of pandemic and government rules in place mean that even though Gurgaon’s Durga Puja committees will hold celebrations this year, they will largely be closed for the general public. Almost all of the Durga Pujas being organised in the Millennium City this year are not allowing visitors beyond the committee members. There are no big pandals, no food stalls, and no on-ground cultural programmes. Tapas Dey from the Sahasrabdi Durga Puja Committee says, “We will be holding only a small puja within the premises. There’ll be no food stalls or other attractions. In fact, the pandal and puja will only be open for members of t

HowIMadeIt! Dibyendu Bhattacharya: Furniture actors don’t bother me

Image
He started off with a celebrated filmmaker Mira Nair’s ‘Monsoon Wedding’ to only find himself in a corner which was devoid of commercial movies and TV shows. But Dibyendu Bhattacharya hung on and gamely continued to do what he enjoyed best- acting. “I wouldn’t have completed my studies if graduation was not required to join NSD,” our guest this week on #HowIMadeIt says bluntly. Dibyendu’s blunt views extend to the fact that the OTT space has become an area of herd mentality, where cuss words and intimate scenes are pushed under the garb of realism. You must see the video conversation below: [embedded content] We argue with Dibyendu in this interesting conversation that parental guidance is not the answer if censorship is done away with. He again bluntly says, “Yes, my 16-year old had a smartphone when he was 13.” Dibyendu has immense confidence and he is now running a fast race with ‘Undekhi 2’, ‘Jamtara 2’ (for which he’s currently shooting in Wai where he’s talking to ETimes fr

Ranjeet: I hit Sridevi with a hunter and returned to my room and wailed! – #BigInterview

Image
With refreshing candour, yesteryear actor Ranjeet says he is free for an interview and that any actor, who claims to be busy during the pandemic, is only lying. During the chat that follows, he confesses he has become lazy during the lockdown, and that he had to take a dip in the pool so that he felt awake enough for the chat. Like most actors of his time, he loves sharing anecdotes and narrating stories. Two hours fly by as he recounts, for ETimes’ #BigInterview, the decisions that shaped his life, the way he was rechristened from Gopal Bedi to Ranjeet, and how professionalism is a non-negotiable aspect. Excerpts: You’ve been doing a lot of gardening lately… I have been fond of gardening since childhood. Fortunately, in Bombay too, we had a terrace, so I could continue my hobby. During the lockdown, the terrace was no longer being used for socialising, so, I started experimenting with vegetables. It’s a great feeling to reap the few okra or cucumbers grown by yourself. A pregnancy shelved Pahlaj-Abhishek’s film

Image
This is one of the untold stories of Bollywood. Wonder why no other section of the media stumbled upon it even after 28 years. It may be recalled that on Saturday, we brought you a detailed story of how most filmmakers are wary of signing a heroine who’s married because she might get pregnant midway through their film and are either unable to shoot or their weight gain allegedly disturbs the continuity. Well, if we had asked senior film maker Pahlaj Nihalani while we were working on that story, you would have got this scoop yesterday. Anyway, we don’t believe in holding things back as long as they are true. So this news story is one such that needs to be told. Way back in 1993, Nihalani had signed up Abhishek Kapoor (who has directed ‘Kai Po Che’, ‘Rock On’, ‘Kedarnath’, ‘Fitoor’) as a hero in one of his films. The film had Rohit Shetty as a third AD (Assistant Director) and Kuku Kohli (Aruna Irani’s husband) as director. The film was 11 reels complete, which included 4 songs, whe

Despite paying 95%-100% of the project cost, the homebuyers claimed they are yet to get possession of their flats. Munish Abrol, president of Fernhill Flat Buyers Welfare Association, said, “The project was pre-launched in 2010 and the developer took 30-40% of the flat’s cost from buyers then. After struggling for years, the developer finally gave us builder-buyers agreement in 2014, with a deadl

Anees Bazmee on Feroz Khan

Image
Several filmmakers and actors have had their own interpretation of terms like suave, fashionable, and modern. Actor-filmmaker Feroz Khan gave the terms a spin that became his signature on screen. It didn’t matter what he played on screen – he made it all look trendy, modern, and coveted. His enigmatic presence on screen charmed the audience for decades before he called it a day. In what became his last film appearance, Feroz Khan played a stylish don in Anees Bazmee’s 2007 comedy, Welcome, starring Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor, and Nana Patekar in central characters. The filmmaker makes it a point to pay homage to the senior star on his birth anniversary every year. Anees, who has also worked with Fardeen Khan, Feroz Khan’s son, says, “Oh! I can never forget the enigmatic personality he had. He was a charmer and such a good-hearted man. I used to sit with him for long hours when we were working on Welcome. He shot a big chunk of his role in Dubai. We would sit together ever

#BigStory: The Movies or Babies Dilemma

Image
Recently, we were stunned when Neha Dhupia made a startling revelation in one of her interviews that she had lost out on quite a bit of work – including an ad that required her to endorse a phone- just because she’s expecting a baby. Gosh! Do such things happen even today? It may be recalled that we had heard it loudly, way back 10 years ago in 2011, when Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan had to quit the film ‘Heroine’ (which was eventually done by Kareena Kapoor). In our #BigStory this weekend, let’s find out the answers to a host of questions revolving around the quandary that the married Bollywood ladies find themselves in. Can’t the pregnant lady be retained in the project and her shots be taken from angles where her bump is not so visible? Are heroines being made to sign No-Pregnancy Clauses, which had become the talk of the town after the industry started buzzing that Sanjay Leela Bhansali had asked Kareena Kapoor to sign one for ‘Ram Leela’ – that too sometime in 2011? Are today’s producer

Anjini Dhawan: I prefer dancing and gymnastics

Image
With gyms open now, people are heading back to their workouts and for Anjini Dhawan, she does that too, but coupled with a bunch of other regimens. Says Anjini, who’s actor Varun Dhawan’s niece, “Exercise is a very important part in my life but just going to the gym is a little boring for me so I mix it up with my dance classes, kickboxing and gymnastics. Dancing and gymnastics are my favourite form of cardio, I rather do that over running on a treadmill.” ‘I miss travelling so much’ While she likes to work out regularly, eating right is a big part of staying fit and she has a plan in place. “I do intermittent fasting and, in fact, I’ve fully made that a part of my life,” she admits. “I love eating my junk food, too so doing intermittent fasting helps me balance it out. So, I guess eating right is very important, but more than that, eating at the correct time matters. I don’t eat late at all and finish my dinner by 7.30 pm.” It was not the same earlier, she explains. “I wasn’t alw

Suniel & Big B in tears for Jackie’s late mom

Image
Bollywood has a lot of timeless friendships and one of them is between Suniel Shetty and Jackie Shroff. The two seasoned actors were on Amitabh Bachchan’s KBC special episode today and they bonded over a special segment where Suniel opened up about Jackie’s insights and emotions about his past and his mother. In one of the segments, Mr Bachchan enquired about Suniel and Jackie’s bond and then cut into a video byte with Suniel, where he spoke about being Jackie’s friend for decades. The Bollywood hunk also had an emotional moment as he recalled Jackie’s old statement from an interview.
