Activist sends legal notice to MCG over waste management

Gurgaon: A city-based green activist has sent a legal notice to the MCG as well as RWAs of 25 housing societies and HSVP plotted colonies in Gurgaon for their alleged failure to comply with the solid waste management rules.
Vaishali Rana Chandra has threatened to move the National Green Tribunal if the civic body and the RWAs do not segregate waste and install composting units in their societies within 15 days. It is mandatory for bulk waste generators like big housing societies producing 50kg or more waste daily to process and manage the same on their own.
“These bulk waste generators in the city are not segregating waste at source, which is in violation of the SWM Rules, 2016. They have a fortnight to comply with the rules, otherwise I will approach the NGT,” Vaishali said.
According to an HSPCB report in 2019, of the 4,635 tonnes of garbage produced in Haryana daily, “only 17.5% is successfully treated and recycled,” Vaishali said. “Many bulk waste generators are still flouting the SWM Rules and the civic body has been dragging its feet in effective implementation of the same. We will be forced to move the green tribunal if the rules are not followed,” she added.
When contacted, MCG joint commissioner Hari Om Attri said, “Three teams have already carried out a survey in the city. We have tried to educate people by creating awareness and motivating them, but now we will strictly enforce the rules. We have already identified more than 1,000 bulk waste generators in the city and started issuing notices to them.”
“If they fail to comply with the SWM Rules , we will impose a fine of Rs 1 lakh for the first time, which could increase to Rs 5 lakh in case of violation for the second time,” he added.
