Youth offers fake insurance policy renewal, arrested

Gurgaon: A 25-year-old man who allegedly duped people in the name of insurance policy renewal has been arrested by the Gurgaon police.
Cops said Shivnath Pathak used to call people as a representative of a leading insurance aggregator and offer lucrative deals to the potential targets. Once a person agreed, the accused make them share a copy of their old insurance policy. He would then edit the same and send it as a renewed policy, and made his targets transfer money to his bank account.
Pathak, in fact, ran out of luck when Kabir Jain, a resident of DLF Phase-1, approached the Cyber police station of Gurgaon some three months back. In his complaint, Jain claimed that he received a call from a person who identified himself as a representative of PolicyBazaar on June 4. The caller informed Jain that the vehicle insurance of his Fortuner would expire and offered him some lucrative scheme to renew the same. Jain fell into his trap and was duped of over Rs 51,000.
Based on his complaint, a case was registered at the Cyber police station. After nearly three months of investigation and technical surveillance, cops arrested Pathak from Sector 43 in Gurgaon on Monday. Originally from Bihar’s Sitamarhi district, he has been staying in Delhi’s Saket for the past few years. He was produced in a court and remanded in police custody for four days.
During initial investigation, police said, it came to fore that the accused used to call insurance policy holders posing as a representative of PolicyBazaar and duped them by offering lucrative offers to renew their policies.
“Once a target was convinced with his offer, the accused asked them to share a copy of the old insurance policy on WhatsApp. Through an online software, he used to convert the document in editable format and changed the date and other required details to pass it on to his targets as a new insurance policy,” said ACP Karan Goel.
The accused would then ask his target to transfer the premium amount in his savings account. “We are trying to find out how he managed to get the details of policy holders,” said the ACP. “The possibility of involvement of others cannot be ruled out.”
