Cops kick off special drive against old vehicles in NCR districts

Gurgaon: Police have started a special drive against diesel vehicles more than 10 years old and petrol vehicles older than 15 years in Gurgaon and 13 other NCR districts of Haryana. Such vehicles will be impounded and their owners will be issued a penalty of up to Rs 5,000, police said.
According to a 2015 National Green Tribunal (NGT) order, petrol vehicles in Delhi-NCR have a life cycle of 15 years, while the same for those running on diesel is 10 years. The NGT order was issued in view of increasing pollution in the region. Since then, around 640 vehicles older than the prescribed limit have been impounded by traffic police in Gurgaon.
According to traffic police, they have impounded 208 old vehicles so far this year. Most of them have been seized in the past few weeks as traffic rules were not enforced as strictly earlier due to the pandemic and lockdowns, police said.
“Now, we have started a special drive in which the focus will be on older vehicles. Vehicles more than than 10-15 years old will be impounded and the owners will be issued challans. The impounded vehicles can’t be used again and will be scrapped,” DCP (traffic) Ravinder Singh Tomar told TOI.
He added that all kind of vehicles, including two-wheelers, four-wheelers and commercial vehicles, will face action irrespective of their registration. “Even vehicles which are not registered in NCR districts and are from other parts of the country will be impounded if found plying on city roads,” the DCP said
Tomar further said an older vehicle can be identified from its model and its condition. All the impounded vehicles in Gurgaon are taken to a yard near Rajiv Chowk.
Police said if the old vehicle was registered in Delhi-NCR, the owner has only two options: scrapping it or re-registering it in other states. As per the rules, a vehicle is automatically de-registered after its life cycle is over.
The traffic police have written to the regional transport office for details of older vehicles. Gurgaon police have already replaced all their old vehicles.
Some residents said the drive won’t help in checking pollution, but rather push sales of new vehicle. “The life cycle of the vehicle should not be counted in years, but on its condition and number of kilometres,” said Satish Yadav, a resident of Sector 50.
The government should work on developing public transport instead, another resident said.
“In a place like Gurgaon, one cannot commute without a personal vehicle, as there is no dependable public transport,” said Archana Jalan, a resident of Sector 84.
