At 46.2°C, it’s yet another April high, storm may bring relief on Tuesday

Image
Gurgaon: At 46.2 degrees Celsius, the maximum temperature in the city soared to an all-time high in April on Saturday, as residents faced severe heatwave conditions. It was seven notches above the normal and up from 45.9 degrees Celsius on Friday. The minimum temperature was 26.2 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal. The respite from the sweltering heat is not likely for at least the next two days, with the IMD issuing an orange alert for Sunday. According to the IMD, heatwave conditions are likely to continue till Monday and its intensity will start decreasing gradually due to an approaching western disturbance, which may cause thunderstorms and dust storm activity on Tuesday and Wednesday. This year, the city has been witnessing unprecedented heat, with a rapid rise in temperature since March and the situation has been no different in April, which has been breaking all previous records. This year, April has been hotter than the previous year, with the average maximum tempera

Nights on rooftops to nap in cars — coping with crisis

Gurgaon: “The government had promised to make Gurgaon inverter-free. Look how inverter-free we’ve become. The inverter is totally redundant,” said 37-year-old Neeraj Singh, an IT professional and resident of Sector 15, who spent half of Friday night on the terrace of his rented house and an hour in the car, whose AC was mercifully running, on a day the maximum temperature breached 45 degrees. His inverter, putting in a shift because of long outages that the power supply crisis in the state has triggered, hadn’t had the time to recharge for the night, leaving him without backup. Across the city, it’s a similar story for people living in standalone houses, unlike condominiums that have round-the-clock backup. Life has suddenly become a lot more analog. Late nights and after-work hours — OTT time for many — are now being spent socialising on the terraces that have turned refuge from the sweltering homes during outages. This sudden “rooftop camaraderie” reminded a retired bureaucrat of

As mercury hits record high in Gurugram, brace for more outages

GURUGRAM: April has indeed been the cruellest month for Gurugram. On Friday, the city experienced its hottest April day in weather logs, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the next two days for heatwave conditions. The maximum temperature soared to 45.9 degrees Celsius on Friday, just a day after it touched another April record of 45.6 degrees Celsius. Before this, the highest in the month was 44.8 degrees on April 28, 1979, according to the IMD. IMD officials said while 45.9 degrees Celsius was the highest maximum temperature recorded so far for April till now, there could be some inconsistencies as over the years, data had been collected from different observatories across the city. The department started recording Gurugram’s weather data from 1969. The city is experiencing its fourth spell of heat since the mercury soared into the 40s late last month. Respite from the scorching heat is unlikely this weekend, according to the IMD. The depar

CM orders immediate MCG takeover of 9 colonies

Image
Gurgaon: Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Friday asked the MCG to immediately take over nine licensed colonies in Gurgaon — Malibu Towne, Ardee City, Rosewood City, Greenwood City, Mayfield Garden, Uppal Southend, Vipul Garden and Sushant Lok 2 and 3. The takeover has been pending since November 2019. With the takeover, the civic issues of these colonies — which are currently being taken care of by the respective developers — will come under the jurisdiction of the MCG. The residents will no longer have to pay maintenance fees to the developers, as the civic body will offer services and collect taxes. Khattar was in the city to attend the seminar-cum-workshop-cum-conclave (SEWOCON) of RWAs, where top officials of the urban local bodies (ULB) department were present. MCG comes under the ULB department. The MCG has already prepared a detailed project report for the takeover of these colonies after accessing their deficient infrastructure. Officials told TOI that the MCG will now

Found! KL Rahul-Athiya Shetty’s home post their marriage

KL Rahul got out cheaply today in his encounter with the Punjab T20 team, but there’s big news on his front that we are breaking here. The cricketer, who is currently leading another team in the T20 tournament happening right now, is most likely to park himself in Mumbai as soon as the matches in the competition are over. A few days ago, there were reports that the cricketer had rented a swanky sea-facing 4-BHK apartment at Carter Road in Bandra. Reports also said that the rented apartment will cost Rs 10 lakh per month. And then, a little before that, rumour had it that the lovebirds are all set for a winter wedding. But wait! Soon, we heard that there was no wedding happening in 2022 as far as Athiya and Rahul are concerned. Uff! Anyway, the latest confirmed news is that KL Rahul – Athiya Shetty’s forever abode has been decided. A full floor (9th to be precise) has been bought in a building in Pali Hill in Mumbai. KL (as he is fondly called) will stay in the rented house until the n

And it is our birthright to feel proud of our respective culture and language. I am a Pahadi. However, when we consider our nation, in order to make it one unit, we need a thread to connect all of us together. When the constitution was made, Hindi became a national language,” Kangana shares. Haryana govt to buy 500MW, regulator frowns on ‘11th-hour’ measures

Image
GURUGRAM: Amid a power supply crisis that has resulted in blackouts in the state, some relief is in sight, with pacts set to be signed with two companies from whom the state will purchase 500MW. On Wednesday, the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission (HERC) approved the purchase of 500MW at the rate of Rs 5.7/kWH for three years. While MB Power of Madhya Pradesh will supply 150MW, Chennai-based RKM Powergen will sell 350MW. They will supply power between April and October, when the demand is high. It was in the last week of March that the Haryana Power Purchase Centre (HPPC) had sought bids from companies to procure an additional 1,000MW. But amid the pan-India power crisis resulting from a shortage of coal and an increased demand because of an early and intense summer, only two companies responded and offered to sell 500MW. It will, however, take some more time for the deals to formalise and additional electricity to reach the state. Sources in the commission said while MB Pow

Supply still short, long outages continue in Gurugram

Image
GURUGRAM: In the last 24 hours, the city has witnessed multiple outages ranging from 15 minutes to an hour because of a shortage of supply. Urban consumers have been bearing the brunt of staggered power cuts adding up to four to six hours daily, but industrial areas are seeing longer outages lasting from 8pm to 6am. There are also shorter, unscheduled power cuts that have been disrupting production lines, industrialists have alleged. Discom officials blamed a sudden increase in demand due to extreme weather conditions and a disruption in supply for the current situation. The city’s peak power demand in April last year was 1,298MW. This year, it has crossed 1,500MW. But it has been getting only 800-900 MW in supply. Officials claimed they were being flooded with calls from consumers about power cuts, but they were helpless because it was not a technical fault that they could fix. “This time, we had anticipated a load growth (increase in power demand) of 4-5%, but the demand increased

Mechanic falls from sixth floor while installing AC, dies

Aman, an employee of a private company, belonged to UP’s Bijnor. He was working at Mapsko Royale Ville around 6:30pm on Thursday when the incident took place. Residents rushed him to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead. Images of the incident showed the ledge chipped from an edge and the external component of the AC hanging from the wires. “It is not clear if the service engineer lost his balance or if a part of the ledge came off,” a police officer said. Rajinder Kumar, SHO at the Kherki Daula police station, said they have informed Aman’s family in Bijnor. “No FIR has been registered as of now. But we are investigating the matter,” the SHO added. Haryana: Power crisis forces more blackouts, 2nd in a week

Image
GURUGRAM: For the second time in a week, the power shortage that Haryana is facing triggered two blackouts in Gurugram on Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon. Tuesday night’s blackout, caused by power supply being stopped from the thermal power plant at Panipat, lasted from 10.50pm to 11.30pm in Gurugram and adjoining areas. On Wednesday afternoon, the 220kV substation at Daultabad had to be shut down, cutting off power in circle 1 (half the city) for 45 minutes from 3.15pm. The Daultabad substation supplies power to substations in Gurugram village, New Colony, Kadipur and sectors 5 and 37. From these substations, power is further supplied to houses in Old Gurugram, sectors 4 to 23, Palam Vihar, Sector 37 and parts of colonies developed along the Dwarka Expressway. Last Wednesday, the power supply deficit had prompted the power distribution utility to snap electricity supply to the city twice to avert a breakdown. The first one was from 12.40am to 1.25am, while the other laste

2,000 no-parking signs installed to ease traffic flow

Image
Gurgaon: To ease traffic movement, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has installed nearly 2,000 no-parking signs across the city over the last few weeks. According to GMDA, both residents and other authorities had raised concerns regarding disruption in traffic flow and frequent jams due to the illegal parking of vehicles on roads. “Apart from installing these signs, we will also ensure that vehicles found violating norms are towed away by traffic police in association with GMDA,” said a senior GMDA official. Road safety experts who TOI spoke with said that enforcement is critical in ensuring the effectiveness of any signage. “For any initiative, engineering changes and enforcement need to go hand in hand. Installing signs is a good move, but the GMDA needs to enforce the rule, else there will be no impact,” said city-based road safety expert Sarika Panda Bhatt. Residents, meanwhile, pointed out that instead of just addressing the parking issue in isolation, t

Vatika Chk service road to be widened

Gurgaon: The Vatika Chowk, intersection of Sohna Road and Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), has emerged as one of the most congested junctions in city. The construction of Sohna elevated road, which is supposed to unclog Sohna Road, has further aggravated traffic congestion. To tackle snarls at Vatika Chowk, the traffic police held a meeting with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which is constructing the Sohna elevated road, for improving traffic flow at the junction. “A meeting was organised with NHAI when it was decided that the service road from SPR to Vatika chowk will be widened and repaired with placement of a median to facilitate two-way traffic movement,” said DCP (traffic) RS Tomar. The DCP also said that to minimise snarls, they have deployed policemen at the junction in three shifts of eight hours each. “Till this civil work is done, we request commuters to start a bit early to reach their destination on time,” Tomar said. Hindi is no more a national language. They (Bollywood) are doing pan-India films today. They are struggling by dubbing in Telugu and Tamil, but it’s (the success) not happening. Today we are making films that are going everywhere.” Ajay Devgn offered a strong rebuttal on Twitter as he shared, “@KicchaSudeep my brother, According to you if Hindi is not our national language then why do you release your mother tongue movies by dubbing them in Hindi? Hindi was, is and always will be our mother tongue and national language. Jan Gan Man.” While both stars cleared out their differences and settled amicably on Twitter, Sudeep did push a point

STORY: The unfortunate accident is now a thing of the past, and Laura (Anna-Maria Sieklucka) and Massimo (Michele Morrone) are happily married in Sicily. The complex life of a mafia kingpin, however, is often riddled with betrayal and somehow the wife gets entangled in it. If you are here ONLY for the sex, stay. Otherwise, don’t bother. Oh, and, if we haven’t mentioned already, a script so bad that it made us wonder if it had even undergone any edits after the first draft was produced. Clearly, the makers were counting on good looks and beefy men and sexually liberated women to replicate its

After toll stir, calls grow for entry, exit points

Image
Gurgaon: The under-construction Sohna elevated road, which is aimed at reducing travel time and easing congestion on Sohna Road, is facing opposition from people living in the colonies on both sides of the road in Gurgaon. Residents said due to a lack of sufficient entry and exit points to the elevated road, the service roads between Rajiv Chowk and Vatika Chowk are choked with traffic, defeating the purpose of the stretch. Residents living in sectors and societies developed along the Sohna Road and villages like Islampur and Tikli approached the deputy commissioner on Tuesday seeking several entry and exit points to the elevated road. With only one entry point in the area at Rajiv Chowk, the elevated road will be of no use for people living in societies along the road and on SPR and Golf Course Road, they said. The work will be done using a high-power, super-sucker machine and will take nearly two and a half months to complete,” said a senior GMDA official. Image
In his inimitable style, Ram Gopal Varma kicked up a Twitter storm yesterday as he tweeted the following message, “The DISASTROUS fate of JERSEY film in Hindi signals the DEATH of REMAKES for the simple reason it has been proved multiple times that dubbed films like #Pushpa #RRR #KGF2 are doing far better than originals, if the content is good #DeathOfRemakes.” The maverick filmmaker followed up with 5 more tweets on this topic, explaining his stance and why he chose to attach the hashtag ‘DeathOfRemakes’. It’s not about most remakes being flops. Jersey is an example because it’s the latest remake. The makers always want to remake a South film with a local sta
