CM: Have spoken to Adani Power, will solve problem

Gurgaon: Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Thursday he had personally spoken to Adani Power, which has stopped the supply of 1,400MW to Haryana following differences over purchase rates. The CM’s assurance that “the government will fix the problem” came during his visit to Gurgaon, a day after power shortage triggered two blackouts in a span of seven hours in the city.
“I spoke to Adani Power on Wednesday. We will now have a meeting with them in the next two days and find an amicable solution,” said the CM. “During the peak season, (private) plants want to sell power in the open market at higher prices and try to extract a better deal from the governments as well. But during the lean season, the rates are lower,” the CM said.
The state purchases around 1,400MW daily from the private company with which it has a power purchase agreement. But differences have recently cropped up over the purchase rate.
Adani Power, according to the government, has been seeking an increase in rates from Rs 3.40 to Rs 6.25 per unit. The state has objected to it, quoting the purchase agreement, which is for a period of 25 years. The Haryana Power Purchase Centre (HPPC) had last week said the company had stopped power supply, citing increasing cost of imported coal that had made the current tariff of Rs 3.40 per unit unviable, and sought a supplementary agreement for a higher tariff.
But it’s not just the deficit of 1,400MW from Adani Power that has led to the current crisis. A delay in the arrival of coal rakes from mines, at a time when summer demand has peaked early with a hotter-than-usual April, has precipitated the shortfall as well. Haryana requires around 8,000MW a day.
On Wednesday, this deficit had prompted the power distribution utility to snap electricity supply to the city twice to avert a breakdown. The first one was from 12.40am to 1.25am, while the other lasted around half an hour from 6am.
The CM also spoke on another area of concern for residents — crimes in the city. He praised the police force for doing a “good job”. “Compared to other states, law and order is much better in Gurgaon and Haryana. That is why investors are showing interest in Gurgaon, Faridabad, Rewari, Mahendergarh and Jhajjar,” Khattar said, adding that investments in the state had steadily increased over the years.
Talking about his government’s drive against corruption, Khattar said six divisions now had vigilance bureaus and the number of employees had been increased in each. The CM also urged people to follow Covid safety protocols and wear masks in public places. The state government, which had earlier this month, scrapped the Rs 500 fine for not wearing a face mask in public places, once again made it mandatory in Gurgaon and three other NCR districts (Faridabad, Sonipat and Jhajjar) earlier this week as Covid cases began to rise, particularly in Gurgaon.
