Soon, use Uber app to book seats on city buses

Gurgaon: You can soon book rides on the Gurugaman city buses on cab aggregator Uber’s app.
In a meeting held at GMDA office on Thursday, Gurugram Metropolitan City Bus Services (GMCBL) chairperson and authority CEO Sudhir Rajpal approved the launch of a pilot project that will let people travelling on a couple of routes book their bus seats through the cab-hailing app.
TOI had earlier reported that GMCBL was in talks with Uber to launch an integrated premium bus service in the city.
GMCBL will run the pilot project for nine months with two buses on two routes (a bus on each route)— Badshapur bus stand to Huda City Centre Metro Station and BPTP Astaire Garden in Sector 70 to DLF Cyber Park near Shankar Chowk (the Cyber City area). A date for the launch is yet to be announced.
The initiative, though still nascent, offers a glimpse of what state-run public transport could increasingly look like as planners explore ways to make access more convenient to increase footfall and wean people away from excessive use of cars. GMBCL described the tie-up with Uber as the first-of-its-kind integration of public transport with a private player.
According to GMCBL, these non-AC buses won’t have conductors and seats will be pre-allotted. There will be no standing travel on these buses.“The collaboration with Uber for reserving seats in Gurugaman buses will be a unique milestone. Reservation of seats via the Uber app will offer much comfort to commuters who will avail the service. Also, there will be fewer stops, which will help them reach their destination faster. It is an initiative to encourage Gurgaon residents to opt for public transport and a step towards a cleaner environment as it will help reduce overall traffic load on roads,” Rajpal said.
The buses will ply on both routes from 7am till noon and from 3pm to 8pm. Each bus will do three round trips in the morning and three in the evening. The frequency of departures will be one hour.
“The future of mobility is shared and multi-modal. We are engaging with transit authorities in various cities, including Gurgaon, to provide technology-first mobility solutions,” an Uber spokesperson told TOI. “Such integrations with public transport authorities can help transporters better demand prediction and will make discovery of mobility options seamless for riders. Integrations of this nature are helping improve the mobility landscape in our cities,” the spokesperson added.
