2,000 no-parking signs installed to ease traffic flow

Gurgaon: To ease traffic movement, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has installed nearly 2,000 no-parking signs across the city over the last few weeks.
According to GMDA, both residents and other authorities had raised concerns regarding disruption in traffic flow and frequent jams due to the illegal parking of vehicles on roads.
“Apart from installing these signs, we will also ensure that vehicles found violating norms are towed away by traffic police in association with GMDA,” said a senior GMDA official.
Road safety experts who TOI spoke with said that enforcement is critical in ensuring the effectiveness of any signage. “For any initiative, engineering changes and enforcement need to go hand in hand. Installing signs is a good move, but the GMDA needs to enforce the rule, else there will be no impact,” said city-based road safety expert Sarika Panda Bhatt.
Residents, meanwhile, pointed out that instead of just addressing the parking issue in isolation, the GMDA needs to look at the matter at a broader level.
“People are parking on the sides of roads because there is no facility to park vehicles anywhere else. If you put up signs and remove the vehicles from one place, they will find another similar location to park. Rather than installing signs, GMDA should look at increasing spaces where people can legally park, whether these are surface parking or multi-level facilities,” said Nirmal Bakshi, a resident of DLF 5.
GMDA has lately been working on a plan to develop sensor-based parking management and guidance system in the city. At present, the authority is exploring the possibility of such a facility in Sector 44. Additionally, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) is working on constructing three multi-level parking in the city, two in Sadar Bazar and one in Kaman Sarai. The city currently has only one multi-level parking in Sector 29.
