Western disturbance likely to bring relief from heatwave in Gurugram: IMD

GURUGRAM: Residents are not likely to get any relief from the sweltering heat for at least the next couple of days, with the third heatwave spell in the city, which started on April 13, expected to continue till Tuesday.
“There will be a gradual rise in the maximum temperature by nearly two degrees during the next two days, and then it will start falling. Till Tuesday, the heatwave conditions are likely in the South Haryana region, which will ease from Wednesday onwards,” an Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.
According to the IMD, a fresh western disturbance may impact the western Himalayan region from April 19, with a possibility of thunderstorms and lightning on Wednesday and Thursday, which could bring down the temperature by a few notches. However, the chances of rain for the city are less this week.
“A fresh western disturbance, now, a cyclonic circulation over Iran, is headed towards the western Himalayan region. As a result, strong surface winds with a speed of 25-35 km/h are likely to prevail in the city during the next 72 hours. While there is a minimal chance of rain, there may be thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places on Wednesday and Thursday,” the official said.
On Sunday, the maximum temperature was 42.6 degrees Celsius-five notches above normal. It was slightly up from 42.3 degrees Celsius recorded on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the minimum temperature settled at 23.6 degrees Celsius on Sunday, four notches above normal. It was 24 degrees Celsius the day before.
On Monday, there will be mainly clear skies, with the minimum and maximum temperatures hovering around 26 and 43 degrees Celsius, respectively, according to the IMD forecast.
The city air quality index remained in the poor category, with an air quality index (AQI) of 276 compared to 253 on the previous day.
Meanwhile, parts of Delhi reeled under a heatwave on Sunday with the weather department predicting a further rise in the mercury.
The city is likely to face heatwaves till April 19. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), at Safdarjung — the city’s base station — the maximum temperature was recorded at 40.9 degrees Celsius, four notches above the season’s average, against 40 degrees Celsius a day earlier.
The minimum temperature on Sunday was 21.7 degrees Celsius, the season’s average, against 22 degrees Celsius a day earlier. The humidity at Safdarjung oscillated between a maximum of 67% and minimum of 21%.
