Anya Hotels - New Kid on the Block

Anya Hotels & Resorts have come up with their maiden venture on the Golf Course Road, Gurgaon in the form of 117 rooms Business Boutique Hotel, that includes 15 suites. The hotel located ideally for a discerning business traveller who likes to indulge in a bit of luxury, budgets permitting of course. Major MNC’s like American Express, GENPACT, DELL, Aon Hewitt & popular shopping venues are just around the hotel giving it an added edge.

The hotel is chic with a lot of open spaces which one realises after a suspicious entry through a narrow alley they call a “porch”. The ballgame changes once the valet greets you with a “Namaste”, gives you a parking token and guides you to the entrance of the lobby.

The lobby is resplendent with modern architecture, original artwork and a voluminous atrium adorned by three huge chandeliers. I am told the chandeliers look absolutely fascinating as the daylight fades away. The check in for guests is sit down which looks comfortable & the concierge was quick enough to help me with my solitary bag. The lobby has adequate, comfortable seating and a “Patisserie”, that is currently work in progress.

I was met by Rajnish Sabharwal, the General Manager of Anya Hotels & Resorts who took me on a walkabout. We first checked out the Banquet areas which are elaborate enough for 200 people sit down functions. Next stop was the Amaltas Spa developed by L’Occitane (pronounced Lox-EE-Tan) which speaks a lot about the luxury you are in for. Right next door is the yet to be inaugurated al fresco poolside bar which looked promising despite the fact that it is in the shadow of high rises. Adjacent to the bar is the upcoming specialty restaurant aptly called “The Italian Kitchen” which upon inauguration on the 17th of this month will offer a selection of the best wines, wood fired oven pizzas, antipasti, entrées and desserts.

We walked through the rooms & suites that Anya Hotel has to offer. Anya does seek to indulge you in unmatched luxury with their plush original artworks, silk accents, wooden floors, L’Occitane toiletries for select in-house categories, 40 inch LED televisions with DVD player, and iDocks. Phew! I hope they have stocked the ugly “Lightning” adapter too for people who have moved on to iPhone 5. This surely will be to an Apple freaks delight. Did I mention that their select rooms have a private Jacuzzi too?

We dined at the spacious “THE CAFÉ” – the 24 hour restaurant that is ideal (read HUGE) for business lunches, afternoon tea & snacks or leisurely dinners. Chef Sailesh, the Kitchen Chieftain had prepared his signature few for me to sample since Rajnish was on a strict dessert diet.

The first course of Mulligatwany was a delectable & interesting variation infused with Thai flavours – very innovative. Adding a dash of lime took it to an entirely different level. A must try. Next round offered was .. Hmm .. Butter chicken with butter naan & naan do pyazaa (my nomenclature). The Punjabi in me got excited and did more than sampling. The butter chicken gravy was neither sweet nor sour and the tandoori morsels were succulent – made just right. The butter naan were crisp and went well but naan do pyaza failed to impress. What really impressed me was Chhena Palak – A delectable saag preparation served with small pancakes made out of chhena or curd cheese. I don’t think I have ever had such a delicately spiced palak (Spinach) till now. A definite on every table & recommended for hardcore non-vegetarians too.

Whiling away time between Butter Chicken and Chhena Palak I also sampled Spaghetti in Arrabiata sauce. While the dish in itself was fine it was served cold and didn’t manage to flutter me around.

Rajnish & I closed the meal with a platter each of Indian sweets including a Gulab Jamun (was nice, can be softer), Raj Bhog (very nice, can be bigger) and Moong Dal Halwa (must be sweeter).

I must say that the kitchen was efficient and service was very attentive, however, do note that the restaurant was not busy and that I was dining with the General Manager of the property. It has to be seen what happens when the house is full which is the litmus test for any restaurant within or outside a 5 Star environment.

By all means go & get pampered!
