Heavy rain hits Khori demolition drive too

Gurgaon: The demolition drive being carried out in Khori village over the past few days by the Municipal Corporation of Faridabad (MCF) was halted on Monday due to heavy rainfall.
“Our teams, along with police, were deployed at the village till 1pm and waited for the rain to stop, but as the India Meteorological Department released a prediction of heavy rains in the area for the next three hours, the drive had to be cancelled. However, it will resume on Tuesday,” said MCF commissioner Garima Mittal.
The colonies in the village, which have not been demolished so far, provided tarpaulin sheets to the villagers whose houses have been razed to protect them from rain. “We have been managing with the help of the neighbours. They provided us tarpaulin and plastic sheets and have also been giving us food from time to time,” said a resident of the Khori village. However, the MCF officials said that they have made arrangements of food and shelter for the villagers at the Radha Soami Satsang Beas campus and people can go there and avail the facility.
The Supreme Court on June 7 had ordered MCF to clear eco-sensitive Aravali forest land of encroachments. The corporation was given six weeks’ time to demolish illegal houses built on the land. Following the order by the top court, the MCF had introduced a rehabilitation policy on July 13.
According to the MCF’s rehabilitation policy, the residents of Khori village, who fulfil at least one of the three eligibility criteria, will be rehabilitated in EWS flats in Faridabad’s Dabua Colony and Bapu Nagar. The allottee will have to pay Rs 3.77 lakh for one EWS apartment and the payment of Rs 17,000 has to be done within 15 days of the issue of allotment letter. Moreover, financial assistance of Rs 2,000 per month will be given to the eligible residents of Khori village for making their own rental arrangements for six months.
