Peepal for east, amla for west: 193 villages in Gurugram set to get ‘Panchvati’ trees
GURUGRAM: With a view to increase the tree cover in the district, Gurugram will soon have ‘Panchvatis’ in 193 villages. These Panchavatis are traditionally groves comprising five trees — peepal, banyan, bel, amla and ashoka trees. These plants have environmental, religious, and medicinal significance. The drive is part of a state-wide programme.
For this, land is being identified in each village in the district. A specific area of village land will be used as a cradle for the Panchvatis. “We have already started the work. These Panchvatis will be planted in each direction — peepal will be planted is the east, banyan in the north, bel in the centre, amla in the west and ashoka tree in the south,” said Rajeev Tajyan, divisional forest officer, Gurugram.
“It will be developed near ponds, temples, and common areas in all villages of Gurugram. We have already spoken to several villages regarding the project,” he said, adding that villagers will protect and nourish them.
Meanwhile, Gurugram on Sunday observed Van Mahotsav and plans to plant 15 lakh saplings this year. Of these, about 1.5 lakh saplings will be planted by the forest department while the rest will be planted with cooperation from the public, various institutions, and organisations in the district.
Functions were held on Sunday to mark the 72nd Van Mahotsav across Haryana. Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar also launched the e-Pathshala app through video conferencing. The app will help people find out which sapling is available in which nursery and help geo-tag plants.
