Gurugram: A calculator to plan rainwater harvesting

GURUGRAM: The GuruJal society constituted by the district administration has created a rainwater harvesting (RWH) calculator on the basis of the city’s rainfall record of the past 30 years. Officials said residents can access the RWH calculator on the portal. The portal — gurujal.org/rwh-calculator/ — will also provide information on the vendors who can set up rain water harvesting system recommended by the calculator.
“According to a survey done by the Central Ground Water Board, the city can recharge 1,190sqkm of land, out of its total area of 1,258 sqkm, through artificial and natural methods. So, this leaves us with a lot of scope to recharge ground water. The most effective method to recharge our groundwater table is through rain water harvesting,” said deputy commissioner Yash Garg.
A resident who wants to install a harvesting system will have to provide data about their rooftop area, green area surface and block they reside in. Once these details are given, the calculator will plan the capacity and annual recharge potential of the harvesting system.
“The catchment area for recharge should be cleaned before the monsoon arrives every year. Recharge chambers shall be checked and cleaned at a seven-day interval or more frequently during the rainy season,” read the instructions on the portal.
