Rain deficit 16%, eyes on sky this week
Gurgaon: The city witnessed a hot and sultry Saturday with mercury again breaching the 40-degrees Celsius mark after a week. The maximum temperature was 40.2 degrees Celsius, up from Friday’s 38.7 degrees and two notches above the season’s normal. The last time it was above 40 degrees Celsius was on June 16 (41.4 degrees).
Saturday’s minimum temperature was 23.5 degrees Celsius, four notches below normal, a marginal dip from 23.7 degrees the day before. The relative humidity index oscillated between 55% and 66% throughout the day.
With a halt in pre-monsoon showers for the past few days, the city’s rainfall deficit is now 16%, according to the IMD. Between June 1 and 25, Gurgaon has witnessed five rainy days with a cumulative rainfall of 26.4mmm compared to the normal of 31.6mm for this period.
With pre-monsoon showers likely to hit the city from June 27, Gurgaon may recover the rain deficit, an IMD official said. In June last year, the city reported a deficit of 59% with 17.2mm rainfall, against the normal of 42.5 mm.
“A dry spell and clear skies have led to a rise in temperature and similar conditions are likely on Sunday as well. Mercury will rise by about 2 degrees Celsius during the next two days, after which it is likely to fall by 3-4 degrees. Under the influence of lower-level easterly winds and the movement of an east-west trough southwards, pre-monsoon activities will gain pace from June 27. There is a possibility of thunderstorms in Gurgaon and adjoining areas on Monday,” said Manmohan Singh, director of IMD (Chandigarh).
Sunday will be mostly sunny with the minimum and maximum temperatures expected to hover around 24 and 40 degrees Celsius, IMD said.
Meanwhile, the city’s air quality index was ‘poor’ on Saturday at 230, compared to 233 the previous day.
