Heavy rain, gusty winds likely today in Gurugram
GURUGRAM: The city is set to get some respite from the heat as it will witness heavy showers from Thursday till Wednesday. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds with a speed of 40km/hr to 50 km/hr are also expected, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The department has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for the next three days. “The maximum temperature is expected to be around 35-37 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature will be 27-25 degrees till June 21,” said an IMD official.
Residents witnessed a humid and hot weather on Wednesday with the maximum temperature at 42.7 degrees Celsius, three degrees above normal. The minimum temperature was 27.8 degrees Celsius, one notch above normal. The city witnessed clear skies throughout the day.
The city’s air quality index (AQI) was in the ‘moderate’ category on Wednesday at 175.
After a dip in temperature recorded on Tuesday in Delhi, the maximum temperature again rose on Wednesday. The day temperature was recorded at 42.2 degrees Celsius, three degrees above normal, at Safdarjung, the city’s base station. It was 2.6 degrees Celsius higher than Tuesday’s maximum temperature. However, respite is expected from Thursday as rain is likely to bring down the day temperature below 40 degrees Celsius.
According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), two stations — Mungeshpur and Najafgarh — at maximum temperatures of 45.1 and 45.3 degrees Celsius, respectively, recorded heatwave conditions on Wednesday. However, the minimum temperature at Safdarjung settled at 29.4 degrees Celsius, two degrees above normal. The relative humidity oscillated between 53% and 27%.
The Met department has predicted rain for the next six days. “Delhi is likely to receive pre-monsoon showers, which may cause a dip in temperature,” said RK Jenamani, senior scientist, IMD.
The Met department has placed a ‘yellow’ alert from June 16 to 20 as rain is likely during the period.
