Gurugram: E-waste collection centres set up in Sectors 14, 17

GURUGRAM: A month-long e-waste collection drive, which started earlier this month, is ongoing in Sectors 14 and 17 and e-waste collection boxes have been placed at different collection centres.
Mandevian Teachers Association (MANDETA), a group of faculty members of Management Development Institute (MDI), in partnership with NGO Saahas has started the programme with an objective to segregate e-waste to avoid mixing it with municipal waste. The programme started from adjoining areas of MDI and is expected to spread to other parts of the city.
The collections centres are set up to make the public aware of the items that are included in e-waste such as electrical manufacture rejects, end of shelf-life electronics and discarded parts from repaired/refurbished electronics. Appliances like computers, smartphones, laptops, washing machines, dryers, home entertainment and stereo systems, toasters, electric kettles and microwaves, etc are displayed under the caption “Know your E-Waste”.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), e-waste generation has increased in India in the past years. In 2018-19 the country generated 7.71 lakh tonnes of e-waste which reached 10.24 lakh tonnes in 2019-20. There are 468 authorised dismantlers and recyclers in 22 states, with a processing capacity of 13.85 lakhs tonnes of e-waste.
Professor Anil Misra, secretary of MANDETA, said the generation of e-waste is likely to increase as the pandemic and the work from home culture has increased the electronic equipment usage and subsequent e-waste.
“E-waste releases harmful chemicals like lead on burning and when the chemicals seep into the groundwater, they affect the land, water and soil. E-waste also contains within them metals like gold, silver, copper, aluminium as well as other components like plastic and glass. When processed through recyclers and dismantlers, these can be retrieved efficiently,” Professor Madhushree, the vice-president of MANDETA explained.
The E-waste Rules 2016 mandated bulk users, producers and manufacturers to recycle their e-waste. Citizens, however, continued to discard or sell their e-waste to local junk dealers in order to get a nominal price in return. To tackle this rising issue, Saahas NGO initiated an e-circular program in Delhi NCR and Gurugram.
The key objective of the programme is to create awareness through schools, universities and residential areas, as well as through platforms like radio and social media.
