Days to get warmer by 2-4°C, rain may return from June 26

Gurgaon: Temperatures rose a few notches on Wednesday as hot and humid weather returned to the city after a five-day reprieve thanks to pre-monsoon showers.
The mercury touched a high of 36.4 degrees Celsius, nearly four degrees above the previous day’s maximum temperature, data by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) showed.
The minimum temperature, however, continued to hover around 22 degrees Celsius — five notches below normal. The relative humidity index remained high and oscillated between 62% and 77%. According to the Met department, the maximum temperature is likely to rise by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the next three days, but another round of pre-monsoon showers could hit the state from June 26.
Scattered rain is expected in isolated places, including Gurgaon, meteorologists said.
“The weather is likely to be dry during the next three days and as a result the temperature will remain on the higher side over the state. The current wind pattern is also feeding moisture into the atmosphere. So, the high temperature coupled with humidity would increase discomfort. However, pre-monsoon activities are likely to resume June 26 with light to moderate rain and thundershowers at isolated places in Haryana,” said Manmohan Singh, director, IMD Chandigarh.
He said that pre-monsoon rain is a precursor for the southwest monsoon system in the region. “The monsoon has already advanced over many parts of the country, including east Uttar Pradesh and parts of Madhya Pradesh. There is no sign that suggests a delay in monsoon arrival in the region and it may advance over the state by the end of this month or early July,” he added.
For Thursday, IMD has predicted mostly sunny skies, with the minimum and maximum temperatures expected to hover around 24 and 37 degrees Celsius, respectively.
On Wednesday, Gurgaon’s air quality improved slightly from the previous day, but remained in the ‘moderate’ category. The average 24-hour AQI reading was 128, compared to 140 a day before.
Meanwhile, the maximum temperature in Delhi spiked by 3 degrees Celsius, though few areas recorded very light rainfall on Wednesday. Only Palam and Mayur Vihar recorded 0.5mm rain in the past 24 hours.
In some areas of the capital, maximum temperatures touched 39 degrees Celsius, a rise of over 7 degrees since the beginning of the week.
IMD data said the maximum temperature at Safdarjung was 37.2 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season’s average, as against 34.5 degrees on Tuesday. The minimum temperature in Delhi was 24.3 degrees Celsius, four notches below the season’s average, compared to 24.9 degrees a day earlier. Najafgarh turned out to be the warmest area of Delhi, with the maximum temperature at 39.2 degrees Celsius, followed by Mungeshpur at 39.
With dry and warm westerly and northwesterly winds blowing from the afternoon, the weather department does not expect pre-monsoon rain in the next four-five days, and the maximum temperature at the city’s base station Safdarjung could rise up to 40 degrees Celsius by Saturday.
Humidity levels are also likely to remain high, oscillating between 56% and 81%.
