Conduct thorough probe so that graft accused are jailed: Div commissioner

Gurgaon: The divisional commissioner of Gurgaon directed the deputy commissioner and senior police officers to ensure thorough investigations of all corruption cases and ensure that the accused are convicted. Rajeev Ranjan, who is also the commissioner of Rohtak division, also told them to ensure that no corrupt officials get away due to poor investigation and lack of evidence.
The divisional commissioners of eight districts — Gurgaon, Mahendergarh, Rewari, Jhajjar, Rohtak, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri and Sonipat —held a meeting with the deputy commissioner, deputy police commissioners and police officers of these districts in Gurgaon on Tuesday. The main emphasis of the meeting was on making watertight cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA), 1988, improving the quality of evidence, plugging the loopholes and ensuring speedy trials.
Ranjan said officials booked for corruption are acquitted in court due to the absence of evidence and poor investigation. This has created the perception that corrupt officials will eventually get away without any punishment. “We need to change this perception and for this, it is important to ensure maximum conviction in graft cases by making a strong case with adequate evidence,” said Ranjan.
The commissioner directed the officials to study cases in which the court had convicted corrupt officials and improve investigation and documentation for trial.
He also said there should be good coordination between public prosecutors and investigating officers, for which training should be provided to both parties. “Whenever an investigator has to appear before court, they should be guided by a public prosecutor and briefed about previous statements recorded before the court,” said Ranjan.
The government agencies were directed to complete the investigation in a time bound manner on complaints received from Lokayukta and immediately take disciplinary action against those found guilty.
