Haryana: 4 killed, 1 injured in Yamunanagar scrap godown fire

YAMUNANAGAR: Four people of a family, including three minors, were killed and one critically injured after a major fire gutted a scrap godown in City Center Park area of Yamunanagar on Thursday.
The deceased have been identified as Niyamudin (37), natively from Madhuban district of Bihar, his daughter Fiza (12), and two sons, Chand (8) and Rehan (3). Niyamudin’s wife Naseema got seriously injured with burn injuries.
Naseema is undergoing treatment at civil hospital in Yamunanagar, police said.

The incident occurred around 1.30am. The neighbours alerted the police and fire officials after seeing layers of smoke coming out of the godown.
The police and fire department teams rescued 17 people of four families living at different quarters for labourers inside the godown as they broke through the wall taking access from the rooftops of neighbouring houses.
An eyewitness Samta said, “Everyone managed to come out but Niyamudin’s family could not make it due to huge flames.”
Niyamudin worked as a labourer at a plywood industry in Yamunanagar and he lived with his family at a rented quarter inside the godown.
Yamunanagar fire officer Parmod Duggal said six fire brigades were deputed to control the fire which they doused after several hours.
“Our teams, with support of the police officials, managed to rescue four families but we could not save one,” said Duggal.
Duggal said that according to initial analysis the reason behind the fire seems to be electric short circuit. “Scrap godowns often keep inflammable substances and we will investigate the spot to ascertain exact cause,” said Duggal.
On receiving the information of the fire incident, Yamunanagar city mayor Madan Chauhan also reached the spot and expressed his condolences for the loss of the lives.
Sources said that the scrap godown belongs to Naveen, resident of City Center Road, Yamunanagar, and was established about 40 years ago. There were different quarters for labourers and their families inside the godown and a total of five families lived in them.
Yamunanagar City police station house officer (SHO) Dal Singh said, “A total of 22 people lived inside the godown in different quarters and 17 others were rescued in time. The injured woman’s condition is reported to be out of danger. Four dead bodies have been kept at mortuary for postmortem.”
