‘Make all efforts to increase registration of new voters’

Gurgaon: Divisional commissioner Rajiv Ranjan held a review meeting on Friday on revision of voter lists with officials of Gurgaon, Rewari and Mahendergarh districts.
In the meeting, Ranjan directed officials to make intensive efforts towards increasing voter registration. He also asked the deputy commissioners of all three districts to supervise the electoral roll revision and state the reason in case of an increase in voters from a particular area.
In the meeting, officials pointed out the ‘indifferent attitude’ of political parties in appointing booth-level agents (BLAs) to make the electoral rolls error-free and assist booth-level officers (BLOs) in registering new voters. Political parties haven’t appointed a single BLA in these three districts, officials said.
Deputy commissioner Yash Garg said 54.3% of the first-time voters in Gurgaon have downloaded their electoral photo identity card and others are also being encouraged to do so.
“The download rate can be increased by organising camps in colleges and universities. Forms for voter registration of newly-eligible voters can be filled along with the form for driving licence. Voter registration forms can also be filled online through the common service centres,” Ranjan said.
Officials were also instructed to provide identity cards and name tags for BLOs to avoid any hassle during fieldwork to update the electoral list.
Stressing upon the use of the government’s ‘Garuda’ mobile application, Ranjan asked officials to ensure that BLOs register themselves on the app. Out of 1,236 BLOs in Gurgaon, 980 have registered on the app so far, the official said.
