Gurugram: Door-to-door vax for 12-14 planned in summer break
Gurgaon: The health department is planning to organise a door-to-door Covid-19 vaccination drive for teenagers in the 12-14 age group in the city during the summer holidays, an official said on Monday. So far, 34% of the children in this age group have received the first dose of Corbevax since the vaccination for them began on March 16. Around 56,000 teens in this age group in the city are yet to take the jab against Covid-19.
“We have already reached out to all schools. We are gathering area-wise data so that we can conduct the vaccination drive where maximum recipients are unvaccinated in this category,” said Gurgaon chief medical officer Virender Yadav. Summer vacations normally begin around May and go on till late June-early July.
The CMO said that on Monday that authorities will also focus in slum areas to ensure all children in the age group are vaccinated. India-made Corbevax, manufactured by Biological E, is the only vaccine used for this age group. Two doses of the vaccine have to be administered 28 days apart.
The district had facilitated door-to-door vaccination for those in the 15-plus age group since February 27 and for adults (18-plus) since November last year. Vaccination for the 15-18 age group began in early January, and since then, Haryana has inoculated 17% — or 1,70,256 — of its eligible population in the category with the first dose.
Teenagers said they were relieved that they have been included in the vaccination drive against the viral illness. “I have not been going out much because of the third wave of infections earlier this year. I hope the vaccine will provide protection against the virus. Even door-to-door vaccination drives will increase the pace and it means that recipients eligible for the vaccine can get their dose at the earliest,” said Chetan Bhandari (13), who took his first jab at a government high school at Bhangrola on Monday.
Experts also pointed out that the door-to-door camaign has helped the state pick up pace in vaccinations. “It is better that we vaccinate children at the earliest. So far Haryana has carried out the door-to-door drive in remote areas of the state. This has been beneficial for people who had issues with access to health care facilities,” said Dr Dhruv Chaudhary, Haryana’s nodal officer for Covid-19.
In the door-to-door initiative, a team allocated to an area visits every household to facilitate vaccination. Each team has three members – an accredited social health activist (ASHA), an auxiliary nurse midwife (ANMs) and an anganwadi member.
Data shows 2,183 children in the 12-14 age group and 1,346 adults got jabbed in the district on Monday. In all, 4,658 jabs were administered, of which 2,541 were first doses and 1,540 second doses.
