Two-day field survey to assess learning gap due to pandemic
Gurgaon: Aiming to gauge the extent of learning loss among students due to the pandemic disruption, the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), jointly with the education department, will conduct a two-day field survey for Class 3 students.
Called the Foundational Learning Study (FLS) 2022, the survey on March 24 and 25 will assess the reading and writing levels of Class 3 students across the state. It is part of a nationwide survey by the education ministry and the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), which aims to involve over 1.5 lakh students across India. “As directed by the Ministry of Education (MoE), the SCERT will undertake a two-day long exhaustive survey of students across the state. Unlike the usual surveys periodically conducted to assess students’ fluency in reading, writing and numeracy, this aims at assessing the understanding of basic concepts among students. The major focus would be on reading fluency because that is the essential step in comprehending and grasping concepts,” said SCERT state coordinator Tanu Bharadwaj.
The survey will roll out in over 180 schools across 22 districts in the state. Schools will get selected based on random sampling. The chosen schools can be government, government-aided, private, Hindi and English medium ones. Nearly 180 field investigators (FIs) have been appointed to do this selection. In the second week of March, the FIs were trained, assessed and given necessary directions at their respective District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) centres.
From each school, nearly 10 students will be selected for the assessment and quizzed based on parameters decided by the education department.
Data gathered from the survey will form the basis of designing training programmes for teachers to fight learning disparity due to online education.
“This is for the first time that students will be assessed on a one-on-one basis. It will eliminate the margin of error that could result in data inconsistency. The study aims to find out the learning disparity and loss. Once the data is collected, it will be compiled and sent for analysis and interpretation. Then, specific teacher training programmes and adjustments in pedagogy will be made to improve the quality of education,” Bharadwaj added.
Although the academicians have welcomed the move and said that it is much needed, they have advised caution and precision at the stage of data interpretation.“The pandemic widened the chasm between rural and urban areas and private and government schools. Data alone will not tell the story if a proper context is not there. Assessment parameters, data segregation based on specific design, infrastructure, resources and causes of disparity need to be highlighted,” said a city-based academician and a principal of a frontline private school.
