‘Smart upgrade’ for streetlights on 9 roads in new sectors

Gurgaon: The streets of the newly developed sectors are going to be a whole lot smarter with the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) planning to convert the streetlights on nine stretches into a smart network. The project, officials said, has the potential to reduce operating costs as it would provide web-based control of the light fixtures and the network.
The first-of-its-kind initiative will be rolled out on roads between Sectors 76 and 77, 75A and 76, 75 and 75A, 73 and 74, 71 and 73, 70 and 75, 70 and 70A, 68 and 69, and 68 and 70, which house several schools, gated societies, offices and commercial spaces and see a high volume of vehicular and pedestrian movement.
According to officials, unlike regular standard streetlights, the smart network will be linked to the Integrated Command and Control Centre of the GMDA, enabling officials to monitor, control and dim them remotely using a cloud-based application.
“These smart lights will have a pre-programmed operating schedule like regular streetlights and will also allow the control centre to control the brightness. For example, if traffic thins post-midnight, we can switch from 120 watts to 60 watts instead to save power consumption,” Shitij Kumar, an executive engineer at GMDA’s electrical infrastructure division, said. Smart streetlights, the official added, can also trigger maintenance alerts in real-time.
The authority, which floated a tender inviting bids for the project this week, expects to complete it in six months. The project is set to cost the GMDA around Rs 10.9 crore.
“The nine stretches in the newly developed sectors will be the first few areas in the city to have a smart streetlight network. Currently, Delhi has similar a network near Rashtrapati Bhawan and the presidential estate,” Kumar said. He added the project may be replicated in other areas depending on its performance.
