₹50cr C&D waste fraud: A month on, no FIR yet

Gurgaon: The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) is yet to approach cops over an alleged fraud of Rs 50 crore by a private firm engaged for management of the city’s construction and demolition (C&D) waste, nearly a month after the MCG House decided to file a police complaint against the company.
After a heated exchange between the MCG commissioner, councillors and mayor on the former refusing to share the report of the alleged fraud on February 24, it was decided that action would be against the firm even though a probe by the committee formed by the state government is under way.
Councillors said MCG’s delay in filing a police complaint shows that the House’s decisions have no value and the House meetings are “a sheer waste of time as decisions taken in the meeting are not followed”. “It has almost been a month since the house unanimously decided to get an FIR filed. But MCG is reluctant to take action,” said Ashwani Sharma, councillor of ward 19.
Mayor Madhu Azad, who had after the last House meeting told mediapersons that prompt action would be taken against the private firm and officials involved, now said a decision will be taken after the panel formed by the government completes its probe. “I have directed the commissioner that action should be initiated as soon as the investigation is complete and the report should be shared with me,” she said.
The department of urban local bodies had constituted a three-member committee to probe the case on February 2. The firm, meanwhile, had denied the alleged fraud. “We have all relevant documents to prove that these allegations are false and baseless and done without proper study,” a spokesperson said.
