Youth gets 20 yrs in jail for raping minor

Gurgaon: A fast-track court in Panipat sentenced a youth to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping an eight-year-old girl in 2018. The Class 2 student was returning home when she was abducted, taken to a room and violated by the convict.
Additional sessions judge (POCSO) Sumit Garg also imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000 on 25-year-old Sonu after holding him guilty of the heinous crime on March 12. Sonu has been in judicial custody since his arrest on June 2 in 2018, some 10 days after the crime.
The judge handed down the punishment to Sonu after observing that there was no inconsistency in the minor’s testimony that could make the court doubt the credibility of her version. “Infact, her version is duly supported by her father and mother to whom she had narrated the entire crime soon after its occurrence.” The court further observed that the version of the girl was of paramount significance as the parents had no independent knowledge of the crime and they came to know about the same from the rape survivor only. “Therefore, the credibility of the version of the girl is central to the decision of the case,” Garg said.
District attorney of Panipat, Rajesh Choudhary, said that the girl was returning home from school when Sonu abducted her and took her to the room where she was raped. “At the time of committing the rape, he extended a life threat to the girl if she raised a noise. The victim came back home weeping and narrated her ordeal to her mother,” he said.
The girl’s father lodged a police complaint on May 25, 2018, following which an FIR was registered at Chandni Bagh police station of Panipat under Section 376A of IPC (rape) and Section 6 of Pocso Act. Ten days later, Sonu was arrested.
