Only 800 in 12-14 group vaxxed on 2nd day of drive

Gurgaon: Around 800 children in the 12-14 age group got their first shot of the Covid-19 vaccine on the second day of the drive — lower than the opening day’s 6,587 as festivities for Holi began.
Inoculations for this age group began with the India-made Corbevax vaccine on Wednesday.
Vaccination centres will also be closed on Friday due to Holi. “During festivals, pace is usually slow. All the schools are also closed in the district for a week due to examinations. Vaccination is likely to pick up gradually after this,” said Dr Virender Yadav, Gurgaon chief medical officer.
The state government has provided around 8,500 doses of the Corbevax vaccine for inoculation of children in this age group. The drive was expanded to include adolescents between 14-18 age group from January, and for the 12-14 age group from March 16 — an year after inoculations began for the older age groups.
Developed by Hyderabad-based Biological E, Corbevax is the only vaccine to be approved for use among children in the 12-14 age group.
Two doses have to be administered 28 days apart, according to guidelines.
According to the Gurgaon administration, around 85,000 children in this age group are eligible to get the shot in the district. There are a total of 10 lakh children in this category in Haryana.
Officials said on Thursday they are planning to increase the pace. “We will gradually increase the number of session sites. Right now, we have fixed doses at 200 for each site. We are studying the pattern and we will increase doses according to the demand across sites,” Yadav said.
Children said they hope to get the shot to be able to go back to physical classes in schools without fear. “I have not been going out much… I hope the vaccine will provide protection against the virus,” said Suman Kumari (13) at a vaccine centre in a Bhangrola government school.
Twelve-year-old Priya Poonia, also at a vaccine centre at a Wazirabad school, said: “In the last two years, we hardly got to attend school. We are getting vaccinated with the hope that a lockdown phase does not return. The vaccine is not painful at all.”
On Thursday, 430 adults were administered the shot in Gurgaon. Around 185 adolescents in the 15-18 age group took the shot in the city apart from 9 healthcare workers and two frontline workers, government data showed. A total of 138 booster shots – a third dose of the vaccine – too were given.
