Long snarls, longer outages as rains leave city reeling again

Gurgaon: Long outages added to problems the city faced on the streets as a heavy downpour for the second consecutive day inundated both sector and arterial roads on Wednesday morning. The city recorded 91.88mm rainfall till 6.30pm.
The downpour started around 6am and continued intermittently till 3pm. Waterlogging was witnessed in Ardee City, Mayfield Garden, Galleria market, South City-1, Palam Vihar, Kanhai Chowk, sectors 9, 10 and 44, Sushant Lok, Ambedkar Road, MDI Chowk, near Narsinghpur on NH-8, Nathupur sabzi mandi, Dhankot, Udyog Vihar, Kapashera, IMT Chowk, Pataudi Road, Basai Road and Gold Souk mall.
Tailbacks were reported on NH-8, with vehicular movement very slow during the morning rush hours. Major sector roads were also waterlogged due to rain. Snarls began to ease after the rain stopped and the water cleared.
“This is the situation every year. A little rain shows the reality. The administration always makes plans, but nothing happens on the ground level,” said Ashok Garg, a resident of Sushant Lok -1.
Traffic police officers, standing almost knee-deep in the accumulated rainwater, were seen managing several areas, including Kapashera border, Narsinghpur and IFFCO Chowk. “Waterlogging remained as long as it was raining. It slowed down traffic and at many places, we had to divert traffic or help stranded vehicles. After it stopped raining, the accumulated rainwater started to recede and normal vehicular movement was restored,” said an officer at IFFCO Chowk.
Many areas witnessed long power cuts after the rain. “There was no electricity in the area the entire day. Power backup can’t last that long,” Palam Vihar resident Kriti Gur said.
Asked about the outages, a DHBVN official said: “The ownership of many areas lies with the developer. They need to upgrade the infrastructure to check power cuts during rains.”
Deputy commissioner Yash Garg said all civic agencies worked together to ensure that people didn’t face any kind of inconvenience during the rain. GMDA officials too said they managed to ensure that the rainwater receded within two hours after the rain completely halted. “Nearly 90% of the water receded within two hours. This shows that the system is working. Gurgaon received heavy rainfall on Wednesday, and it is normal to get waterlogging in some areas which are low-lying,” GMDA chief engineer Pradeep Kumar said.
According to IMD, the city is expected to witness heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning for the next two days. “Light to moderate rains with a few intense spells of rain will continue till the weekend,” meteorologist Navdeep Dahiya said. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 29.8 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was 24 degrees Celsius.
