‘I want to marry Hrithik Roshan,’ says Gayatri
Gayatri Bhardwaj dreamt of becoming a Miss India when she was in pre-nursery and her determination and hard work made her win the crown of Femina Miss India United Continents 2018. But her real struggle started after winning the crown – deciding what she wanted to do next and more importantly how she wanted to take things forward. That is when she associated with the celebrity management firm Times Talent. She was last seen in a popular web series Dhindora. Gayatri also has an upcoming Bollywood movie which will be announced soon. In this EXCLUSIVE conversation, we delved deep into her journey, struggles and how she has always dreamt of being a typical Bollywood heroine. Here’s all about Gayatri’s honest confessions…
When did you decide to take part in a beauty pageant?
That I decided when I was in pre-school (laughs). For a fancy dress competition my mother asked me what I wanted to be and I, without a hitch, shouted ‘Miss India…’, because that was the time when we were watching Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Rai and other beauty queens reigning the world. I still have that photograph dressed as Miss India. After growing up I used to follow this column in Delhi Times where the information was shared about Miss Indias, so the dream had never taken a backseat. While I’ve always aspired, I never thought I could do it because it’s like one in a million gets to wear the crown.
What was the family’s reaction when you told them that this is what you want to pursue? Because I’m the only girl child in the entire family, they were definitely protective of me. But it was not new to them. Because I’ve always been a performer. I’ve always performed on stage, dancing, singing, elocution. So, it was not a shocker. But since I was doing my dentistry, I was in a very studious mode and I had put on a few kilos while studying for long hours. So my diet was all over the place. My mother asked me if I was sure to do this because that would require a lot of hard work and that I should be realistic about my approach. So, I gathered all the confidence and told her that I would need just six months to prepare and then apply. So I took six months of preparation. And my parents were definitely very supportive and instrumental in preparing for the pageant.
You were studying dentistry!
Yes. Actually, I never practiced but I did my bachelor’s in dental surgery. I have grown up with working parents, my father is a pilot and my mother is a psychologist, and then even my grandparents have been teachers. So they wanted me to do my education properly. And, the thought that you should always have a backup plan!
What is life like after winning a pageant or winning the crown?
Actually, those are the toughest days! I thought that the tough phase would be when you are preparing for it and after that everything is full of glamour. But that’s actually not the case. Because after winning the crown, you have no clue what to do next! And that’s when I actually had to sit and introspect, see what my strengths and weaknesses were. And what I could potentially do good. Acting was something I had never tried even at school level. But honestly, pageantry made me taste the glamour and that is a very addictive feeling. That feeling was strong enough for me to decide what to do next. So I went for a few auditions but I felt I wasn’t prepared yet. So I decided to do an acting workshop and allowed myself to learn the skill before hitting another audition.
I prepared myself with different workshops and I worked with some amazing industry experts, people who have been in the business for years. And I was very fortunate to learn from them. In 2020 December, I shot my first ever web show ‘Dhindora’. That was a life changing experience for me, because that show had seen great success. It was the most watched show rated at 9.4 which is the highest rating that any Indian web show has had on IMDb, along with ‘The Family Man’.
You have shot for a movie as well as a web show. Was there any difference in the experience?
So I have worked on a film as well as a web show. But since I have experience of both, I can say that a film is a lot more stressful, in my opinion, because you don’t have much time to shoot it. The number of shooting days are far less than what you have on a web show. The concept of a web show where you have the advantage to watch one episode every day has led to a different kind of addiction – binge watching. So people connect with the characters on a web show a lot more and the characters get embedded in their mind. I feel web shows are definitely better to explore your acting skills because they are shot for longer periods but then both genres have their plus and minus. Films have their own charm, the whole Bollywood feel of music, sets, dancing and the romance and drama, which is what actually got me to act in the first place.
What matters more – a good script or a good character?
Definitely a good script. The film is going to be appreciated because it’s a team effort and so the script has to be great. The team working on it has to be great. And even if my part is small but the character is well written and is instrumental in the storyline, I would go for it. That’s what matters.
What’s next?
I have a film that is all set to release in the next few months. We’re hoping for a theatrical release but COVID situation can bring in some changes. It will be my first Bollywood movie and I’m so excited!
So are you playing a quintessential Bollywood heroine?
Yes. It’s a love story and I’m playing a typical Bollywood heroine, wearing nice clothes and also dancing. It’s an out-and-out romantic comedy/ drama – a dream come true role.
What was the most exciting part of being an actor on the set?
Honestly, it was watching the playback and seeing what I have done and to see what it would actually look like on screen. Because up until now, I’ve only seen other people doing it. So, to watch myself on screen at the playback and absorb the whole process of being on set was magical.
– THE RAPID FIRE ROUND –
Whom do you idolise in Bollywood the most?
Priyanka Chopra without a shadow of a doubt!
Movies or web series – what do you like watching more?
I like watching movies more. I’ll be honest, because I don’t have time to watch web shows I get addicted and then I binge watch and then I waste my time.
Your favourite food
Pizza.
The best thing you can cook
I love cooking. I make very good egg dishes and love to make omelets, fried eggs and different recipes made of eggs.
Favourite holiday destination
My favourite would be Greece because of the blue waters and white contrast buildings and also the partying.
Hypothetically speaking , as part of our rapid fire round, name the one Bollywood actor you would like to date and the one Bollywood actor you would marry…
I would like to date Siddhant Chaturvedi, but I don’t know if he’s single or not. And, I think I would like to marry Hrithik Roshan — if he is willing to settle down again. He is my childhood crush, so I cannot leave him out of the picture.
Whose biopic would you like to play?
I would love to play Priyanka Chopra. I feel there is a need for a biopic to be made on her. She is so inspirational.
A movie you wish you were a part of
‘Student of the Year’. I really wanted to play this kind of fun and colourful Regina George’s inspired role – a Dharma film any day!
