‘Stop funding waste pick-up in Faridabad’
Gurgaon: MCG councillors will raise the issue of the civic body incurring expenses for waste collection in Faridabad at the next House meeting slated for February 18. MCG pays around Rs 2.5 crore a month to concessionaire, Ecogreen, for the neighbouring city’s waste management.
Despite raising the issue on earlier occasions, the councillors said the civic body had not taken up the matter with the higher authorities.
Ashwani Sharma, the councillor of Ward 19, who submitted this agenda for the House meeting, said, “Why should Gurgaon bear the burden of its neighbouring district when they can use their own funds for waste management?”
“It does not make any sense for the Gurgaon municipal corporation to spend its funds on Faridabad. Our funds should be utilised for the development of our city,” said Dharambir, councillor of Ward 21.
The councillors have also demanded that the waste transported from Faridabad to Bandhwari should be stopped immediately. While Gurgaon sends 1,000-1,100 tonnes of waste daily to Bandhwari for processing, Faridabad transports around 800-1,000 tonnes.
“Faridabad also can identify a landfill site in their district. We had raised this issue earlier as well when we were given assurance that the matter would be taken up with the higher-ups. To date, no progress has been made in this regard,” Sharma said.
The urban local bodies department of Haryana has, meanwhile, put on hold the tenders floated by the MCG for clearing and processing legacy waste at the Bandhwari landfill site, despite the deadline of July 2022 looming over the civic body for clearing 35 lakh tonnes of legacy waste from there.
Mahesh Dayma, councillor of ward number 30 under which Bandhwari village falls, said, “The Municipal Corporation of Faridabad (MCF) was created in 1994 and MCG was formed in 2008. MCF is an old corporation and every corporation should have its own system of waste management. It should not put a burden on any of its neighbouring cities.”
When contacted, MCF commissioner Yashpal Yadav said, “As per our agreement, the principal entity is responsible for making payment to the concessionaire and the MCG is the principal entity. We have already identified a site in the Pali Crusher zone, where a processing unit will be set up by the end of this year, and only dry waste will go to Bandhwari.”
