Shankara Cancer Centre to roll out advanced robotic assisted surgery to treat complex cases

Bengaluru-based non-profit cancer hospital, Sri Shankara Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, will roll out a modern robotic surgery unit on February 26.

The unit, called Da Vinci X, will help surgeons carry out smaller and complex incisions with better visibility. This also helps patients with faster healing and minimal complications during the procedure.

The cutting-edge technology allows for an additional 2-degree rotational movement of instruments as compared to the human hand of the surgeon. This leads to better access to the surgical field for the surgeon with minimal unforeseen errors, veteran surgical oncologist and the centre’s head Dr BS Srinath said.

The technology enables three-dimensional visual access to the surgeon, who can perform the robotic-assisted surgery through a console where he or she can visualise the surgical field and guide the robot to perform precise surgical movements, he explained.

The surgical oncology department at the hospital performs more than 300 surgeries every month for different types of cancer. With the Da Vinci X unit, patients can look forward to smaller scars, shorter hospital stays and fewer episodes of postoperative pain. “The technology will not only improve the lives of our patients but also the lives of future patients treated by surgeons undergoing training at our reputed institution,” Dr Srinath added.

The hospital will also roll out Varian TrueBeam STX, a radiotherapy linear accelerator unit, which will help deliver highly precise radiation doses to patients as all processes are automated with no scope for manual errors. Every single episode of radiation delivered is accurate and undergoes quality check by the inbuilt quality assurance system.

This is the second machine in a hospital in the entire south India, Dr Srinath said.

Odisha Skill Development Authority chairman Subroto Bagchi, Odisha’s Mo School Abhiyan chairperson Susmita Bagchi and Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) vice chancellor MK Ramesh will participate as guests at the roll out event on Saturday.
