Haryana to conduct third sero survey in June

Gurgaon: In order to evaluate how many people have been infected with Covid-19 in Haryana, the state government will begin a third serological survey in June. For this, the state requires 1,490 Elisa testing kits. One kit can test 96 people.
Haryana has already procured 745 kits for the survey, which will be carried out by three-member teams consisting of a doctor, a health worker and a lab technician each. “We are waiting for the guidelines for the third survey, which will be carried out in June. The sample size and dates are yet to be decided,” said Dr Virender Yadav, chief medical officer, Gurgaon.
A sero survey includes testing a group of individuals to monitor trends in prevalence of a disease. Due to the high proportion of asymptomatic or mild infections, data available only for lab-confirmed cases doesn’t capture the real spread of Covid in the population. Hence, serological detection of specific antibodies against SARS CoV-2 can better estimate the true numbers of infection.
The first sero-survey was conducted over three days last year in August. A total of 18,905 samples were collected from all districts, which revealed an overall sero positivity rate of 8%. It also found that more women had developed antibodies in four districts compared to men —Gurgaon, Faridabad, Nuh and Sonipat.
The second sero survey was conducted on October 19-20. A total of 16,477 samples were collected. Overall, a positivity rate of 14.8% was found. It also revealed a higher positivity rate in urban areas in comparison to rural areas of Haryana.
The survey also found that overall sero positivity was similar in both the genders — 14.7% in men and 14.8% in women.
