Parents’ body seeks rule to make balance sheets public

Gurgaon: In wake of a recent judgment of the high court ordering private schools in Chandigarh to upload the income-expenditure balance sheets on their websites, the state parents’ body has written to the chief minister to bring in the same rule in the state by amending the Haryana Education Rules, 2003.
Parents said schools have repeatedly cited the high court’s October 2020 order that allowed them to charge tuition fees if they are providing online classes. They, however, alleged that schools have wilfully chosen to ignore the directions of the court to submit balance sheets for the last seven weeks.
“The issue of fees has resulted in a lack of trust between parents and private schools. Schools keep arguing that they are incurring almost the same expenditure as they were during pre-Covid times when physical classes were suspended. If that’s the case, there shouldn’t be any hesitancy in making their balance sheets public. It’s in the interest of both schools and the parents,” said Kailash Sharma, general secretary of Haryana Abhibhavak Ekta Manch, the parents’ body that has written to the CM.
Parents further said that if the government fails to take action on their request, they will take the matter to court.
Private schools, however, called the claims made by the parents “misleading”, asserting that all their documents are regularly audi-ted and that all the expenses incurred are disclosed to the government.
