Mehboob on collaborating with AR Rahman

The ‘Rangeela’ trio, Ahmed Khan, AR Rahman, and Mehboob are all set to reunite for Tiger Shroff and Tara Sutaria-starrer ‘Heropanti 2’. In an exclusive interview with ETimes, songwriter Mehboob opened up about the songs in the film, their much-awaited collaboration, and his bond with Rahman. Excerpts…
You will be reuniting with Rahman for the first time after ‘Yuva’. What is the kind of bond that you share with the maestro?
Working with Rahman is like working with a brother. It has been 25 years and we are like family now. Even our kids are friends. Our bond is quite strong as we both almost started our journeys together and have done so many projects together. We share a good rapport. The result is out there for all to see.

‘Rangeela’ trio AR Rahman, Ahmed Khan and you are coming on board for Tiger Shroff’s ‘Heropanti 2’. How did that happen?
Ahmed was planning to get us both on board together for a long time now. With ‘Heropanti 2’, he got the opportunity to do so. He approached AR Rahman and he agreed. I was going back home for my daughter’s birthday and suddenly I got a call from AR saying somebody wanted to talk to me. He added me in a conference call and the third voice was that of Ahmed. He told me that he is doing ‘Heropanti 2’ and wants Rahman and me to do the songs. It has always been fun working with them. We have food over and do a lot of masti. Thankfully, we have already completed two songs.

Tell us all about the songs in ‘Heropanti 2’…
The songs in ‘Heropanti 2’ are going to be a full package. It will have songs for everybody and every situation. My fans can expect something really special in the film. I assure you that the combination of AR Rahman and Mehboob will not disappoint you. I hope we get the same love and blessings as we have got earlier.

There are various myths surrounding your age and place of birth. Would you like to clarify them?
Yes, some fool has written something in Wikipedia about me. I would like to clarify that my native place is Chandwad which is 50 KM from Nashik. My father was born there. He shifted to Mumbai in 1941. My siblings and I have been born and brought up here in Bandra. Also, my birth year is 1961. Somebody has written 1953. I agree, I am getting old but don’t make me old already!
