3 police teams free Tamil Nadu businessman kidnapped from Delhi airport

GURUGRAM: Police of three states joined hands to rescue a Madurai-based businessman and his assistant who were kidnapped soon after landing at the Delhi airport on July 7. Five of the kidnappers were arrested on Friday night from a house in Delhi’s Shyam Nagar, where they had held the businessman and his assistant hostage for two days.
KS Vilvapathy, who deals in textiles, and his assistant, Vinod Kumar, came to Delhi after one of the accused identified himself as a trader and promised to help them strike a deal with a garment factory in Bangladesh.

Soon after landing in Delhi on Thursday, one of the kidnappers – Jiravni Babu – received Vilvapathy and Kumar at the IGI airport and they boarded the car he had brought along. They first went to a place in Gurugram, police said, and then headed for the hideout in Delhi.
“One of the accused was in touch with the businessman for the past 20 days. He, somehow, persuaded him to come to Delhi. He told him he would help him get orders from another businessman in Bangladesh, who, too, was coming to Delhi,” said Sateesh Balan, inspector-general (STF) in Haryana.
The kidnappers allegedly threatened to kill Vilvapathy and made him call his family members in Madurai for a Rs 50 lakh ransom. Vilvapathy’s family went to the police instead.
The special task force (STF) in Haryana swung into action after Balan received an SOS call from his Madurai counterpart and batchmate on Friday, informing him about the ransom call. Preliminary investigations revealed that though Vilvapathy had come to Gurugram, he was eventually taken to Delhi before his phone was switched off.
The Haryana STF got in touch with the force in Delhi and launched a search. Around 10pm on Friday, Vilvapathy and Kumar were rescued from the house in Shyam Nagar and their five kidnappers arrested.
“The businessman had been incurring losses for some time. So, he readily agreed to the offer and came to Delhi,” Balan said.
It was Babu who got in touch with Vilvapathy after coming across his name on the internet. On Thursday night itself, Vilvapathy called up his family in Madurai and told them to arrange for the money. His family lodged a kidnapping complaint with the local police. The arrested accused were identified as Jiravni Babu, Aasif Hussain, Mohammad Azad, Mohammad Kareem and Mohammad Sonu, all residents of Delhi.
