Curbs on single-use plastic: Municipal Corporation Gurugram lists 7 markets for drive

Gurgaon: MCG has zoned in on seven markets in the city to enforce the ban on 19 single-use plastic items, officials said on Monday.The markets shortlisted for the drive are in sectors 4, 22 and 23, Vyapar Kendra, Eros City Square and Arcadia markets in Sector 49, and Jail Complex.
“We are going to emphasise on seven markets first where challans will be issued, and the traders and the public will be educated about the single-use plastic (SUP) ban. People will also be made aware to replace their polythene carry bags with cloth bags. It is a challenge that there are people who still don’t know about the ban,” said Jaideep Kumar, additional commissioner, MCG.
“We have started targeting these seven markets from today (Monday) and seized the banned items being sold in these markets and polythene carry bags. We will also carry out information, education and communication (IEC) activities in these markets to generate awareness on the SUP ban,” said Rishi Malik, senior sanitary inspector, MCG.
The Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021, make it illegal for anyone in the country to manufacture, import, stock, distribute or sell 19 SUP items. These include straws, bubble wraps, plastic films and coverings such as those on cigarette packets, plastic cutlery, disposable cups, decorative thermocol, ear buds and so on.
Despite the ban coming into effect on July 1, compliance has been week. Critics, vendors and those running roadside eateries, say there are few alternatives to plastic, that too expensive.
MCG’s field staff said on Monday they have seized disposable cutlery from local eateries, packaging films from sweet shops and polythene bags from vegetable vendors in these markets.
The civic body also issued 58 challans on Monday for violating the ban across the city. This included areas on Basai road, Huda City Centre, MG road, Saraswati Vihar, and sectors 10, 4, 7, 22, 47, 48, 49, 50, 58 and 72. MCG has so far issued 175 challans since the ban was first enforced.
