City sweats as humidity level goes up, moderate showers likely today

Gurgaon: Partly cloudy conditions along with moisture laden moderate winds during the day prevented rise in mercury as the maximum temperature was recorded at 34.3 degrees Celsius —three notches below the season’s normal. It was 35.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday. While the minimum temperature stood at 25.5 degrees Celsius — a notch below the normal, same as on previous day. The relative humidity index oscillated between 75% and 90% throughout the day.
With weak monsoon activity for the past couple of days, the residents on Monday continued to be troubled because of the high levels of humidity.
According to the met department, monsoonal activities are likely to become strong from Tuesday and will continue till Friday. While light-to- moderate showers are expected on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, some intense spells may be witnessed on Wednesday, the IMD official said.
“The monsoon trough is active and in the south of its normal position. There are strong westerly winds along the west coast in the lower tropospheric levels and a low pressure area lies over north Chhattisgarh and its neighbourhood. Under the influence of this system, the monsoon will become active in the region with scattered to widespread rainfall activity with isolated thunderstorms and lightning likely over many parts of Haryana from July 5 till July 8. There will be no significant change in maximum temperature in the next 24 hours, thereafter it will fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius,” said Manmohan Singh, director of IMD Chandigarh.
The city’s air quality index deteriorated on Monday and slipped to moderate category after witnessing a satisfactory air day on Sunday. The overall AQI reading was recorded at 164 as compared to 72 on the previous day.
Meanwhile, some parts in Delhi received very light showers on Monday. However, IMD has placed an “orange” alert for Wednesday as moderate-to-heavy rain is expected.
The maximum temperature rose to 36.8 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was reported at 27.4 degrees Celsius.
