Rain misses date with Gurugram, but cool breeze to rescue

Gurgaon: Even though the rain clouds eluded the city on Saturday, cloudy skies with pleasant breeze during the day brought relief for residents, who have been stewing in sultry weather for the past few days.
The daytime temperature dropped by five degrees, just a day after recording the month’s highest at 39.5 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature on Saturday settled at 34.5 degrees Celsius —three notches below the normal, while the minimum temperature saw a slight increase and was recorded at 29.6 degrees Celsius — three notches above the normal. It was 28.8 degrees Celsius on Friday. The relative humidity oscillated between 71% and 81% throughout the day.
The monsoon arrived on June 30 in the city but no showers have been recorded since July 3, which saw light rain of 2.4mm. A wet spell, however, is likely to drench the city in the next couple of days, predicted the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The met department has issued a yellow alert for the city on Sunday predicting heavy rain. “Parts of Haryana, including Panchkula, Narnaul and Chandigarh received moderate rain on Saturday. Rainfall activity is likely to begin from Saturday night in Gurgaon, while moderate to heavy rain is expected on Sunday and light rain on Monday. This will be accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. The temperature is also likely to fall by 2-3 degrees in the coming days,” said Manmohan Singh, director of IMD Chandigarh.
Till July 9, the city has received 37.4mm of rainfall as compared to normal of 40.7 mm with a rain deficit of 8%. Between June 1 and July 9, the cumulative rain stood at 75.2 mm as compared to the normal of 87.8mm rainfall with an overall deficit of 14%.
The city’s air quality index (AQI) remained in the moderate category with a reading of 126 as compared to 105 recorded on Friday. Meanwhile in Delhi, the humidity remained high on Saturday making the outdoors less sweaty.
