CBI to probe Gurugram’s Paradiso collapse

GURUGRAM: Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar told the state assembly on Tuesday that CBI would conduct a probe into the vertical collapse of living rooms at Chintels Paradiso that claimed two lives on February 10 this year.
Ever since the collapse, Paradiso residents had been demanding a probe by the central investigating agency and had hit the streets on several occasions. As of now, three different teams are carrying out probes into the cave-in. One of them is by the additional deputy commissioner of Gurugram, another is by a special investigation team (SIT) formed by Gurugram police and a third by the district town planner (enforcement).
Officials said it was not immediately clear if the three different probes would continue or they would be suspended. “The chief minister has announced that the CBI will conduct a probe into the cave-in at Chintels Paradiso. The government will issue a formal notification about this. Once we get the notification, we will come to know about the fate of the ongoing probes,” said a senior official.
The official, however, pointed out that it was likely that the different agencies conducting the probes would hand over their findings to the CBI. “Parallel probes are not usually conducted,” he said.
Khattar made the announcement in the assembly when Badshapur MLA Rakesh Daultabad raised a question on the investigation of the Paradiso collapse. Sources said that after taking charge of the investigation, the CBI would register a fresh FIR.
The police so far have not made any significant progress in their investigation. The SIT has registered two separate FIRs in the case, but is yet to make any arrest. “We were waiting for the structural audit report,” said a senior police officer associated with the probe.
Additional deputy commissioner Vishram Kumar Meena, who is heading the committee formed by deputy commissioner Nishant Yadav to investigate the collapse, said they had issued 10 notices to people associated with the case so far, including the developer. “The developer had sought 15 days to reply. We will issue them a second notice,” Meena said.
The district town planner said he had submitted all the records related to the building to the committee.
Residents heaved a sigh of relief with the chief minister’s announcement. Rakesh Hooda, the RWA president at Paradiso, said, “We appreciate MLA Rakesh Daultabad for raising the issue in the assembly. It’s a long way to go. Let’s hope for the best.”
Vikram Gambhir, another resident, said the government should ask the central agency to complete the investigation in a time-bound manner.
Manoj Singh, who owns a flat in Paradiso, said the truth should come out at the earliest. “We will urge the government to finish the paperwork so that the CBI takes over the case at the earliest. We hope the announcement is not just an eyewash,” he added.
