Doctor to counsel kids who call Childline soon

GURUGRAM: The district administration has directed the health department to provide a dedicated paediatrician to the Childline to ensure timely treatment of victims of child abuse. The helpline number is receiving calls from several distressed children, and in many cases they needed urgent medical help.
For this, it has been decided to attach a full-time paediatrician to provide medical help to the children.
Deputy commissioner Nishant Yadav on Tuesday chaired a meeting of the advisory board and child welfare committee to take a call on this step. During the meeting, officials of women and child department and childline pointed out that there is need for providing medical help to children who face abuse and call on the helpline number.
“We receive multiple complaints and calls on the childline number and most of the cases are very sensitive. In many cases, children need immediate medical help. In such casesmedical aid should be provided before completing any other formality,” said an official.
Sunil Kohli, chairperson of women and child committee, said in some cases victims of child abuse, who seek help, require immediate medical attention.
“A paediatrician is best suited for the job because all the victims in these cases are children,” said Kohli. The paediatrician will provide required medical help immediately, and later the child can be taken to hospital for further investigation if required.
Kohli added that often the children are found to be traumatised. “We have a panel of counsellors and a standard system in place to make the children comfortable emotionally and psychologically,” he said, adding that qualified doctors are required for medical treatment.
To make children aware about sexual abuse, the administration directed the childline to conduct workshops at schools to educate students about “good touch and bad touch” and make them aware about the childline number 1098.
