BJP bags Sohna Nagar Parishad chief’s post, AAP records first win in Gurugram

GURUGRAM: AAP recorded its first electoral victory in Gurugram by winning a seat (Anju Bala, ward number 1) in the Sohna municipal committee election — the only block in the district where civic polls were held — but lost the president’s post to BJP by 1,864 votes. Out of Sohna’s 21 wards, which fall under the municipal committee, independent candidates won in 20, while AAP secured one seat.
The results of elections held for 28 nagar palikas (municipal councils) and 18 nagar parishads (municipal committees) across Haryana were declared on Wednesday. The polls were conducted after a delay of over a year.
Overcoming fears of a backlash due to the farmer protests and increasing inflation and unemployment, BJP and JJP swept to victory in the polls. AAP, which has gained momentum after its victory in Punjab, also got a foothold by winning the post of president in the Ismailabad (Kurukshetra) municipal election.
Of the 46 municipal councils and committees, BJP managed to win 22 seats, followed by Independents (19) and JJP (3), while INLD and AAP won one municipal council chairmanship each. Unlike BJP and AAP, Congress didn’t contest the elections on the party symbol.
In south Haryana, BJP and Independents won most seats, while JJP won one seat. BJP candidate Anju Devi defeated AAP’s Lalita Devi to win the chairman post of the Sohna Nagar Parishad. Gurugram deputy commissioner Nishant Yadav, who is also the district election officer, said Anju secured 12,185 votes while Lalita got 10,321 votes. “209 voters opted for NOTA. Anju Devi won the election with 1,864 votes. BSP candidate Mala Devi came third with 1,118 votes, while INLD’s Kavita secured 757 votes,” he said. AAP’s Anju Bala won election for Sohna ward number 1 by a margin of 315 votes.
In Nuh, where elections were held for the municipal councils of Ferozepur Jhirka, Punhana and Nuh, BJP candidates Manish Kumar and Balraj won in Ferozepur Jhirka and Punhana, respectively, while its partner JJP’s Sanjay Singh won in Nuh. Congress failed to win any seats. While BJP also won the local polls in Jhajjar, Mahendergarh, Nangal Chaudhary, Palwal and Kundi, Independents secured seats in Bhiwani, Narnaul and Hodal.
State BJP chief Om Prakash Dhankar said out of the 18 municipal committees that went to polls, BJP won 10 and JJP won 1. Of the 28 municipal councils, BJP candidates won at 13 places, BJP-supported Independent candidates won three seats and JJP secured two seats, he said. “The people of Haryana have rejected the negative politics of opposition parties and have continued to support the policies of the state government,” Dhankar said.
AAP spokesperson Sarika Verma said the party had contested at all 46 municipal councils and committees and managed to win one seat in the Sohna ward.
“We had a good start and hope to improve our tally in the upcoming election,” she said. The bigger corporation elections follow, with two civic bodies in Gurugram going to polls for the first time.
