Gurgaon: The GMDA on Friday approved the plan to revamp the Southern Peripheral Road along with the proposals to install hundreds more CCTV cameras and reduce waterlogging in the city.
The Southern Peripheral Road — which runs between the Gurgaon-Faridabad Road and the National Highway 48 via Vatika Chowk — will get 8 new flyovers, six lane-carriageways and six lane-service roads, officials said.
The decisions were taken after the GMDA held its tenth authority meeting chaired by chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Friday.
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) also assented to the second phase of the CCTV Project for City Surveillance and Adaptive Traffic Management, which will involve installation of 1,200 more cameras across 258 locations in Gurgaon.
TOI reported on Friday that the implementation of the second phase will double the number of CCTV cameras in Gurgaon to a total of 2,722 at around 470 locations by the end of next year. This will include expressways, areas near malls, metro stations and busy intersections. The cameras will be used for detection of traffic violations and surveillance for crimes apart from investigation by enforcement agencies.
In the meeting, Haryana CM Khattar – who is also the chairman of GMDA – discussed the CCTV project and directed that half of the revenue generated through traffic challans in the city should be spent on road safety. The remaining should be used for crime control, he said.
The proposal to connect leg 2 and 3 of the Gurgaon-Najafgarh drain was the third project to be approved in Friday’s meeting, which also focused on rainwater management.
Similarly, a decision was made to build a lake near the drain that is meant to curb waterlogging.
“To prevent waterlogging of thousands of acres of land adjoining Najafgarh drain, there is also a proposal to build a lake there. A sewage treatment plant (STP) will also be built along this lake,” the chief minister said.
Officials also said that the Delhi government had decided to carry out desilting of the Najafgarh drain, which is expected to naturally accelerate the flow of water from Gurgaon and solve the waterlogging problem in the city.
Najafgarh falls between Delhi and Haryana.
Further, GMDA sanctioned the proposal to construct a master stormwater drain to cater to sectors 68 to 80, sectors 37C and 37D, and sectors 112 to 115.
The proposal to adopt the Central Integrated Water Management System (CIWMS) in the city, the pilot for which had been launched in June 2020, was also accepted on Friday.
