Break in wet spell for 5 days? Met says mercury on an upward trend

Gurgaon: The daytime temperature increased by around 2°C even though the city received light showers on Tuesday. According to the Met department, the city will continue to witness a rise in temperature for next five days as it may not receive rain till June 27. The temperature is expected to rise by 2-4°C during this period, an IMD official said.
On Tuesday, the daytime temperature climbed to 32.7°C, up from 31.2°C on the previous day. But it was still six notches below the normal.
Similarly, the minimum temperature rose slightly from Monday’s 22.5°C to 23.5°C — four notches below the normal. The relative humidity index oscillated between 70% and 87%. According to the Met, the maximum temperature will hover between 36 and 39°C during the next five days.
The city on Tuesday received showers for around one hour from 9.30am. Till 5.30pm, city recorded 12mm rainfall.
“Rainfall activities, however, are likely to reduce in most parts of the state, but there is a possibility of isolated thundershowers in northern Haryana on Wednesday. During the next few days, the chances of rain in the city is unlikely and the temperature is expected to rise by 2-4 degrees,” said the IMD official. Till June 21, the city received a cumulative rainfall of 24.7 mm as against normal of 22mm and recorded 12% surplus rain.
So far, Nuh and Palwal have recorded 127% and 126% surplus rain respectively. These districts received 39.1mm and 33.3mm till now in June. Sonipat and Rohtak witnessed 68-69% deficit in rainfall. While Sonipat received 10.2mm rain, Rohtak logged 9.4mm.
The city will see partly cloudy skies on Wednesday with minimum and maximum temperatures expected to hover between 24 and 36°C. The city’s air quality index remained in the moderate (140) category on Tuesday. The index was 122 on Monday.
Meanwhile, the daytime temperature in Delhi increased by two degrees on Tuesday even as the city recorded 0.7 mm rainfall. While Safdarjung, the city’s base station, received 0.7mm rainfall on Tuesday (till 5.30pm), Lodhi Road 0.2mm, Ayanagar 12mm, Pusa 2.5mm and Mayur Vihar 0.5mm. Palam witnessed only traces of rain.
According to the IMD, the maximum temperature at Safdarjung was recorded at 34.5 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was recorded at 24.9 degrees Celsius compared. The humidity levels oscillated between 54% and 84%.
“The onset of monsoon is normal, currently the south-west monsoon is around Bihar and parts of Jharkhand and is expected to arrive in Delhi during its normal expected window of June 27-29,” said Mahesh Palawat, vice-chairman, meteorology and climate change, Skymet.
